“I didn’t know you worked here.” Holden appears next to me, and I quickly exit the silly game I was playing. Nothing like distracting yourself from the homework you already have from the two classes that started today. “Ha, I caught that game of Candy Crush, slacker.”

He plops down into the seat beside me and runs a hand through his shaggy blond hair that falls right back into his eyes.Dammit, why does he have to look so sexy doing that?

“I don’t play Candy Crush. And yes, I’ve been a lab slave since I was a freshman. Welcome to the club.”

Holden laughs. “A lab slave? Sounds great. Better than being a ball bitch, I suppose.”

I snort. “A ball bitch. What happened? You didn’t handle them balls well?”

We crack each other up, both of us dissolving into a fit of giggles. “I guess not. They told me the sports department is making cuts, and one of those were the part time positions. My boss suggested here. He said you’re always needing help. You scare everyone away, don’t you?”

“Yep. I think it’s the red hair.”

“That’s gotta be it. You know what they say about redheads.”

“No clue.” I feign a look of confusion. “Never once has anyone mentioned my red hair,” I tease and fail miserably at hiding the grin stretching across my face.

“I think spicy is cute.”

“So you think I’m spicy and cute?”

Holden’s cheeks turn a slight shade of pink, and I love the thrill I feel at the sight of it. He leans closer, so close I can smell his intoxicating scent I’ve committed to memory. It’s like a drug, one that makes you loopy and horny all at the same time. My eyes drop to his mouth, now so close to mine, and I wonder what it would be like to kiss him…taste him…

“I mean, I—” Holden starts to say. But he stops, and I look up to find Jaime staring at us.

It’s like I’m pulled from a trance. Dammit, I wanted to know what he was gonna say. I wanted to breathe him in more, watch his lips move closer and closer to my own…

“Lennox, how about that tour now?”

I jump to my feet, the moment over. “Yes, sorry, we were just going. I’ll show you how we open and close the lab first, Holden.”

He nods and stands up beside me, but I don’t miss the soft sigh that escapes his lips or the faint look of disappointment that passes over his face.

And when he walks me home later that night, and we say good night in front of my door after he insists on walking me to it, I don’t miss the way he keeps looking back down the hallway after he thinks I’ve gone inside.

Damn him and his sexy ass.

But a little harmless flirting never hurt anyone, right?

Chapter5

Holden

Lennox worksat the computer lab. Of course she does.

And I’m a fucking idiot.

Spicy is cute? Really?

What the hell was I thinking?

Why does it feel like I can’t control myself when I’m around her? It doesn’t help that it seems like everywhere I turn, she’s there. I mean, obviously it’s not hard to miss her. Between parties, in passing on campus, living in the same apartment building, and now working together—it’s a lot harder to avoid her.

After my roommates wouldn’t stop hounding me about the party the other night, I finally broke down and went, only to see Lennox being carried upstairs by some frat-looking jock. I tried to ignore it, we’re only friends—what should it matter? But I’d be lying if I said it didn’t dampen my mood. Which in turn pissed me off. I’ve gone to plenty of parties and had a good time without Lennox, but lately…

Fuck that. Stop that thought right there. She’s a friend. There’s no denying there’s some attraction simmering under the surface, but it doesn’t mean it needs to be acted on. A little flirting is cool, and we can leave it there. Especially now being together at the lab, it’s only asking for trouble. And she is fun. We laugh and have a good time, so what’s so wrong with that?

There are plenty of shifts at the lab to pick up, and I grab as many as possible between my tight class schedule. I’m taking some advanced video graphics classes this semester, and I’ve heard they can be quite intense and carry a heavy workload. But I figure when the lab is slow, I’ll get some work done. A much better deal than working in the gym and barely being able to use our phones or do homework.
