“Let go of me!” I yell as I break free from Holden’s arms. “What the hell are you doing?”

He tries to pull me back, but I back away from him. Every step I take, he matches it with a step of his own.

“You heard the woman! Leave her the fuck alone!” The guy I was trying to leave with mouths off at Holden as he steps between us.

“Who the fuck are you? Get out of here. You’re drunk.”

The guy sways back and forth as he gets in Holden’s face and points his finger. “Fuck you.” Then he looks back at me. “Let’s go.”

“You’re not going anywhere with her. So you can take advantage of a drunk girl?”

“She came onto me! What the fuck is your problem, dude? Stop being a fucking cock block, find your own chick to bang, and get the hell out of my way.” He pushes Holden, and that’s when I see Holden transform into something I’ve never seen before. His face turns red, and he pumps his fists in and out at his sides. A murderous look takes over his face, making my heart race. In a split second, he rears his right arm back and punches the guy square in the face. A sickening crack fills the air along with a yelp and down the guy goes. Out fucking cold.

Holden shakes his fist and then turns and looks at me. “I’m taking you home.”

I look at the guy on the ground and the chaos erupting around us as people crowd around.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I yell at Holden, the alcohol buzzing through my veins and fueling my rage. I push past him and stumble toward the door, the room spinning as emotions take over.

Who the fuck does he think he is?

As hard as it is to walk without falling, I don’t stop. I’m halfway down the front lawn when I hear his voice.

“Lennox! Wait!” Holden calls after me.

I turn too fast, and the ground spins. I sway on my feet as Holden walks toward me, but I put my hand up to stop him from getting any closer. “Don’t.”

“Len, c’mon. Don’t be like that.”

“Are you fucking serious right now? What the hell is your deal?”

“You are obviously way too drunk to be leaving with some random guy.”

“Stop! Just fucking stop! You’re not my…my…my fucking bodyguard or whatever the fuck you’re trying to be!”

“I’m just trying to keep you safe. These guys…they don’t care about you. All they want is to get in your pants.”

“No shit, Holden! What don’t you get? That’s all I want from them too! But lately everywhere I turn, you’re there stopping me.”

“You’re drunk and not thinking straight. Let’s just get out of here and sober up.”

“No! No, Holden! My thinking is fine. You’re the one who keeps getting in the way of me having a good time. And now look, I don’t even want to go back in there since you punched the guy I was trying to leave with. How fucking embarrassing. Just leave me the fuck alone!”

I push past him and walk around to the back of the house. I don’t look to see if he’s following me because I don’t care. If he knows what’s good for him, he’ll give me some damn space.

Maybe if I sneak in through the backyard, no one will notice. Like I said, this is the last place I want to be, but I want to drink and forget this entire fucking night. The party is already back to how it was, the drama over.

There’s a tray of shots on the patio table, and I go straight for them.

I’m so fucking mad at Holden.

I take a shot.

Who the fuck does he think he is?

Another shot down.

Does he think he needs to protect me or some shit?
