Everleigh rolls her eyes, but I see the laughter in them. “You’re not fooling anyone.”

“Wasn’t trying to.”

Maia snorts, and we both look at her before we all burst into giggles.

Holden, Landon, and Rhett arrive a little while later, and we all play a round of beer pong, girls against boys.

Later on, I’m sitting outside with Everleigh and Maia, and we do a round of shots.

“If I had known there was a pool, I so would’ve worn my bikini,” Maia says.

“Really?” Everleigh wrinkles her nose as she glances at the pool. “But there are so many heads in there. All I see are floating heads.”

“Floating heads! You’re right!” I say as I look at the pool and cringe.

“Chlorine kills everything.” Maia says, “So who cares?”

“I guess that’s one way to look at it.” I stand. “I’ll be right back. I need to find a bathroom.”

“You want me to go with you?” Everleigh asks, but I shake my head.

“I’ll only be a minute.” I secretly want to sneak away with Holden, but I’m starting to think it might be impossible to pull off. There are so many people around. Where could we even go?

As I weave my way into the house, I spot Holden standing in a circle of guys, all of them talking and laughing. Maybe if I sneak behind Holden, I can steal him away.

As I get closer, the last voice I expect to hear comes from somewhere, and my blood runs cold.

On high alert, I quickly try to find the source, hoping and praying I heard wrong, and I’m just being paranoid.

One step closer and I clearly hear their conversation and their voices. No, no, what the hell is going on? I can’t be hearing this right…

“Be careful of the redheads…them bitches are dangerous.” His nasty voice slurs.

“Dude, my man right here has been tappin’ Len for months now. A certified redhead. You know Lennox, right Aaron?” Landon asks.

He nods once. “Be careful. She will say you raped her.”

I freeze.

That voice. It is him. He’s here.

And what the actual fuck is he talking about?

Landon laughs it off, and Holden lets out a short little giggle. What does he think it’s funny, too? What the fuck? Why are they talking to him? Why are any of them talking to him?

“Nah, Lennox isn’t like that.”

“If you say so.”

And then for the first time since that awful night, we lock eyes. The disgusting piece of shit human and I actually lock eyes, and I want to throw up. He smiles a sickly cruel smile and I gasp.

Holden spins around and sees me. He takes a step forward. “Len, hey. What’s up? I didn’t see you standing there.”

I hold up a hand to keep him from getting any closer. Behind him, the nasty asshole glares at me and mouths something I can’t make out while Landon and Rhett stand there laughing.

No. No, no, no. This isn’t happening.

It can’t be happening.
