They cast shadows on the barren tree branches above, creating a beautiful pattern like looking inside an enormous kaleidoscope.

This doesn’t make sense. How did I get here? I don’t remember any of this. The mushrooms look like garden decorations, but tapping one with my foot it crumbles into pieces, scattering glowing bioluminescent materials around.

Where’s the cabin? Or Sunder?

I turn my head towards a soft melody drifting from an old stone building, but my vision blurs around the edges from the motion.

Interesting.A dream then.

As I approach it, the music grows louder, and I recognize Moonlight Sonata being played on a piano. A small window reveals light inside and a man’s colossal figure playing solemnly hunched over the keys.

The front door swings open from a powerful burst of wind. The man stops playing, turning to gape at me. Standing, his warm smile puts me immediately at ease. His broad shoulders threaten to burst the seams of his white tunic. The enormous man’s auburn hair and beard are a little shaggy, but it makes his head more proportional to his hulking body.

“Mira.” He takes my hand reverently in his, squeezing tightly with both hands. I tilt my chin up to stare at the beast of a man who plays the piano so elegantly and knows my name. This feels so real. A slow smile creeps across my lips as my eyes take in this beautiful man.

Well done, dream.

“Well hello to you, hottie. I’m not normally into gingers, but I’ll make an exception for you.”’

His smile deepens.

“Come. Sit.”

He ushers me inside into a cozy chair by the roaring fire. The warmth beats into me, taking away the chill of the winter night.

The man kneels on the ground before me, looking at me as if I’m his goddess to worship. Complete adoration and love pulse in his hazel eyes speckled with flecks of gold.

“Mmm. I like this dream,” I say, reaching out to run my fingers through his fluffy locks.

“It’s been torture, being so close but unable to communicate. Of course, now that I can finally speak to you, I’m at a loss for words.” His whisper-soft voice somehow still sounds deep and smooth, like warm molasses flowing from a spoon.

“I need this dream every night! You should get naked and tell me how much you worship me.”

He laughs softly, as if I’m joking.

“This is a dream, but it’s also real. We’re in a Dreamshare, Mira. I don’t know how or why. It must be triggered by Sunder’s proximity, considering the timing.”

The blood drains from my face as the air in my lungs depletes. My life force melts away, leaving me dead with shock for just a moment. Dreamshare. That means…

“Who are you?” My voice is hollow as my chest thunders in an anxious tune.

“Well, I once named myself Ben, short for Benefelis, because making light of the situation made it more bearable.”

“You’re one of the other Soul Shards. One of my fated mates?”

He nods as his eyes search mine as he clutches my hand in his, like a toddler coveting a treasured possession. A golden ring stretches around his pupils, wrapped in greens and browns. Something about them feels so familiar. Comforting. Gazing into his eyes feels like home.

“Do I… I feel like I know you somehow.”

A wild grin lights up his entire face as he straightens his back. His face coming almost eye level with mine.

“You do… and have for a while now.”

My heart thuds to a stop as my stomach plummets and then rises again to my throat, my organs hosting the Olympics inside my body. “But… How? I’ve never seen you before. I’d remember you.”

Lines crinkle at the corners of his eyes as he laughs with delight. “Guess.”

“Well… you must look like something else. A disguise?”
