“You’re such an asshole. I can’t believe I was even considering sleeping with you. I can’t even look at you. You’re no fucking better than Tim. Leave! Right now.”

I spin towards the door a little too quickly. My legs feel like rubber. I force them to keep moving. Give her space and time. Swallow the ache in my chest. I pause at the doorway, briefly turning back at her.

“I’ll take a walk, but you need to pack. We’re leaving as soon as this place is empty.”

She hurtles a glass vase at my head, the glass shattering against the wall behind me. I try to keep my pace even as I enter the hallway, shutting the door to her apartment behind me. Through the wooden door, I can still hear her screaming between violent sobs.

“I’m not going anywhere! You can go to faerie hell for all I care. Go rot, Sunder.”

I blink at the ferocity of her words. They follow me down the street as I pace around the block. Things will get better once we get to Illuemera.

There’s just one more hurdle, but I can’t tell her that yet. She won’t go through with it.

I’ll just have to weather the storm after that blow up too.

I used to be a High Elf, and now look at me. What I’ve become. Subject to the whims of a human woman. At her beck and call.

She’s just a means to an end, I remind myself.

But for some reason, that little voice is getting quieter. Harder to believe. I swallow the lump in my throat trying not to think of the pain I’ve caused my mate.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Mira

It took everything in me to not slap his stupid face when he got back to the apartment last night. At least he had the decency to not speak to me. I woke up this morning to a giant breakfast feast including eggs, bacon, and French toast.

I drink my coffee, refusing to eat anything until he puts a warm blueberry muffin split in half with a pad of butter slipping down the sides like a damn butter commercial in front of me.

Begrudgingly, I take a bite, but can’t hold back the decadent groan that gurgles from my throat. I cast a dark glare at Sunder as a hint of satisfaction flashes across his face.

“You make no sense,” I hear myself saying. Damn it. I wasn’t going to break the silent treatment first, but of course, here I am.

“How so?”

“You complain about how I have no stamina, yadda yadda, but every chance you get, you stuff me full of food.”

An easy chuckle flows from his chest, and something inside mine twists. I wish I could hate him as much as I want to.

You’re desperate for his attention. So pathetic, Brenda chides me.

He lifts one shoulder in a subtle shrug.

“It makes you happy.”

He is so matter-of-fact, as though he hasn’t just given me a statement that disarms me.

I search his eyes for some deeper meaning or innuendo, but I find nothing. It’s a blank slate. Maybe it is that simple for him. I avert my gaze, refusing to look at him as I finish the best muffin I’ve ever eaten. It practically melts when it hits my tongue. For some reason, it just makes me angrier at him. Why can’thebe simple?

I need Lisa. She’s on vacation this week visiting family in Charlotte. She hasn’t called me, so I know she hasn’t heard about the work drama yet.

“I’m still mad at you,” I say around a mouthful of muffin. “Your lack of respect for my boundaries, for me. It was unacceptable.”

His voice is soft, almosthumble. “I know.”

“You broke my trust.”

“I did.”
