He winks!

“G-G-Good evening,” Clay says.

The roar is near deafening, louder than it has been all night, and my heart is pounding so hard in my chest it aches. He’s speaking to the crowd, and I’m so overwhelmed with what’s going on around me I don’t know what to do.

“I know I’m not the one you’re used to seeing behind the mic, but t-tonight I p-promise it’ll be worth it.”

He takes a step back from the microphone, looks at the ground, and then looks over at me. I’m a nervous wreck about what he’s doing and what’s happening, but he looks so calm, and there’s so much love pouring out of his eyes. I can’t breathe.

Piano music fills the air, and then it’s followed by everyone else, including the stage band. It’s slow, beautiful, and as Clay steps up to the mic and wraps his fingers around it, I suddenly know he’s written a ballad just for me.

Be still my heart.

Sunlight in the room,

the day’s just begun as I’m waking up with you.

You whisper, “Don’t leave yet,”

knowing for you there’s nothing I won’t do.

As long as you’re by my side,

I hope you know I’m the luckiest man alive.

Cause don’t you know, darlin’,

before all else,

you are the love of my life.

Oh my God.

Tears flood my eyes.

From the city to the country,

for you there’s nowhere I won’t go.

With you, our life’s an adventure,

whether we go fast or we go slow.

Just take me by the hand,

I hope you know, I’m the luckiest man alive.

Cause don’t you know, darlin’,

before all else,

you are the love of my life.

(Instrumental)

Winter, summer, spring, or fall,

it’s the white horizons that have always called.
