Shock registered in her eyes as she froze up. “Shit.”

“Where’s my phone, Sadie?”

“I, uh…I think I…” She slapped her pockets, sighing when she located my phone. “I guess it was just second nature or something.”

I folded my hands behind my back while staring at her. After a second or two, she got the idea that she should start checking the voicemails. She held the phone to her ear and took diligent notes while casting glances in my direction the whole time.

If she was going to work successfully under me, then she had to get in the habit of doing things without further prodding. The only reason I reminded her was because I could tell she was distracted by me.

Though I’d never admit it was my doing, it was too tempting to avoid. Her supple skin called to me in devilish ways. Had we been truly alone in this building, I would have made another move on her, but I didn’t want her to flee again. One wrong move in here would send her to her death. We didn’t want that.

Sadie dedicated several minutes to checking my voicemails. Once she had compiled a list of messages, she returned my phone and held up the notepad. “It’s long.”

“We have all night.”

She flinched. “Allnight?”

“Yes, what did you think I meant by that, Sadie?”

She stammered over a response.

I chuckled while taking the notepad from her, ensuring our fingers touched at length. “It’s adorable how you think I’m going to let you off that easy.”

“Well, I figured I could go home and get some sleep.”

“Who needs sleep when there are tasks to complete?”

Her eyebrows went up. “I see how you’ve managed to make a boatload of money.”

“No, dear. Don’t be mistaken.” I stepped toward her, sending her shuffling back until her bottom was firmly against my desk. “This business exploded overnight by sheer demand. The way we’re going to keep it flying high in the air is by meeting that demand with every bit of sweat and blood we can muster.”

She swallowed hard.

“I need your commitment, your complete dedication to every single one of these people who wants my services. Is that clear?”

She nodded.

“That’s good work, Sadie,” I praised while handing her the notepad. “Get back to the emails and we’ll take a break.”

Neither of us moved. It was like she was waiting for me to step back to get out of her way. But didn’t she know by now? I wasn’t going to let her out of my sight. I wasn’t going to allow anyone near her without my scent on her skin. It was the only way to make sure that no one else approached her.

And if no one else approached her, then surely I could declare her as mine.

Another gulp from her made me ache with want. She snaked back around the desk and plopped into the chair, her heartbeat charging the air with a heavythumpthat drove me wild. Was that how it sounded when she was in the throes of passion? I had every intention of finding out.

And I would make sure that happened sooner rather than later.

Chapter 5 - Andres

Two days of Sadie sitting in my office had my senses swept up in her scent. Every little thing she did went into my memory bank—the way she arched one brow as she concentrated and the darling way she pursed her lips repeatedly while she pondered something were among the most impressionable. Those were things I wanted to retain in case she decided to take off.

Women were finicky creatures, and shifter women were far worse. Delicate sensibilities came with the territory since a lot of us functioned with stronger hormones, emotions, and bonds. Everything was intensified in this human form, and that tripled in my wolf form. It was a wonder neither of us had bitten the other being in such close proximity.

Though she hardly complained about it. My guidance was occasionally seen as controlling to some, but to Sadie, she seemed grateful for my instructions. The keyboard incident as I had come to call it appeared to be an isolated incident as I had taken her hands on several occasions since, and she hadn’t shied away from me.

Professionalism at its finest spoke through her reactions. Every now and then, I would have an explosion, a burst of energetic sentences that refused to be unheard. She took down every word on her tablet, phone, or laptop. During lunch in the garden, she’d scribbled furiously on a spare napkin one of my ideas.

That was the goal for the day if I could stop staring at her neck. Lucious skin like that needed a mark—and I’d kept thinking about Izdor eyeing her like she was a damn slab of prime rib ready to be grilled. The more I recalled it, the more I wanted to launch across the room and bite her until she came.
