The man looked stuck for a second until the fit passed and he waved. “Alright, you two be careful!” He headed toward the gym.

I kept a firm stance with Sadie, narrowing my eyes at the man who had been bothering my assistant. She’djustjoined the ranks with me, and already she was being pestered by other people. “I can’t believe that guy.”

“He was just telling me about the building,” Sadie squeaked.

I turned her toward me, gently rubbing her shoulders. “You sure? You looked uncomfortable. I didn’t like the way he was looking at you.”

Her eyes softened as she peered up at me with slightly parted lips. The rouge in her cheeks must have been from how he had been staring at her like a wild animal. Elderlings had different drives than us. I understood that much. Sadie was a gorgeous woman with a traffic-stopping body and an innocent smile. No wonder he’d been ogling her.

The way she bowed her head toward me and let her hair fall into her eyes told me she had no idea how to get that man to leave her alone. Just the thought of her being stuck without me churned me up inside, driving me to pull her back toward the office. “Don’t be ashamed, Sadie. I’m sure you get bothered a lot being as beautiful as you are.”

“What?”

“I mean to say that you’re…” I glanced out the wall of windows while releasing her shoulder. “You were taking a while. I was worried you had fallen ill or something.”

She chortled. “Two hours into working with you and I already have to use your health plan.”

I stared at the produce garden flourishing next to the building. “I’m glad you can be so cavalier about it.”

Her nervous chuckle faded. “I’m sorry. I won’t get distracted again.”

I let her apology hang in the air. She wasn’t at fault by any means, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t offended. Prompt work meant client retention. If she dallied too much away from the office, then she wouldn’t be able to keep up with me.

Perhaps I had gotten ahead of myself by hiring her.

An irresistible urge to pin her to the wall and claim her overwhelmed me. If she’d had my scent on her, then other men wouldn’t feel free to make advances. She’d be safe from them. She’d have me around even when I wasn’t around. Shifters respected that sort of thing.

She was mine to claim. I wanted her, so I would have her. If I marked her now, then nobody would dare fight against that.

How was I going to manage a bite when she ran off at the slightest proximity?

“You’ll have to be careful with men like Izdor,” I warned as we returned to the office. “Guys like him usually only have one thing on their mind.”

She snorted. “Are you telling me not to flirt with him?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Sounds like it.”

One step was all it took to put me in her path—and when I raised my arm to rest my hand on the door frame, I had her boxed in. I hovered close to her lips, imbibing the delightful way her breath caught in her throat. “Fine then, Sadie. If you so desire to hear it, then I’ll say it—stay away from Izdor.”

Her eyelids fluttered as her tongue danced behind her lips.

She liked it when I said things like that, didn’t she?

Never mind the usual customs. To have her would mean to possess the greatest treasure in the world.

Sadie gave me a sly smile. “You’re not the boss of me, Andres.”

“Actually, sweet Sadie, Iamyour boss.”

Realization swept through her features, something that made the chase all the more alluring. She slid out from the little box I had made with my right arm—for I’d never truly trapped her against the door—and shuffled toward my desk. After she sat down, she perched her fingers on the keys as I’d originally instructed.

Pride swelled inside me watching her do what I’d told her. It wasn’t the fact that her posture was perfect, or her hair was now out of her face so I could see her lips. It was more about the delicate subservience that had risen from her in the past few minutes. She wanted me to take over. She wanted me to lead her.

“You’re right,” she whispered. “There’s a lot backed up here.”

“And the voicemails?”
