What happens when we start arguing?

Andres scooted between my legs and massaged my neck. That darling touch alone inspired me to close my eyes. My breathing leveled. My heart stopped hammering.

“We shouldn’t have done that,” I blurted.

His fingers stopped moving, but he didn’t remove them from my shoulders. “Do you regret it?”

“No, I just—”

“You didn’t want to do it, did you?”

My eyes snapped open. “I didn’t say that.”

“You’re thinking it.”

“You have no idea what I’m thinking, Andres.”

He stepped back, disappointment slipping into place like a mask. “You might be right about that.”

My heart raced as he went back to the other side of the table. No, please, don’t go away. But I was already standing at that point. I was already heading toward the doorway leading to the landing. I couldn’t stop myself.

“Sadie,” he called authoritatively, “don’t forget our arrangement.”

“What arrangement?”

So, the arguing began now. How could I have been foolish enough to believe that I could avoid it? Much like my parents, I was finding my place in the world with someone who would bring out the worst in me.

But when I turned to face Andres, I didn’t see a man holding something over my head who was ready to fight. I saw exhaustion. I saw irritation.

I dropped the steel fortress for a second. “Sorry, I’m just…” I shook my head. “I don’t know what I am.”

“Go home and rest tonight. We’ll go over the details tomorrow.”

Tomorrow. It was hard to believe that much time would eventually pass. Right now, I felt like I was stuck in a tumbling world where I yearned for and resisted his influence. That didn’t even make sense.

I adjusted my blouse and fixed my skirt. I tried to search for my panties, but I didn’t want to stay longer than necessary. As much as I was desperate to get up here, I felt a stronger urge to head home and lock myself away. Why had I taken this job? I was cozy being an aerobics instructor.

A phantom buzz made me think of my phone, and all those ridiculous messages from my mother. I scooped my purse up from the couch and checked the contents. Yep, my phone was definitely blowing up again. What could she possibly want now?

“Tell her I’m coming with you to the luncheon,” Andres stated.

Goddess, I knew he didn’t know what I was thinking, but how in the world was he getting so eerily good at predicting things like that?

I plucked my phone from my purse. “She’ll stalk you.”

“I invite her to check on my every move.”

“You sound confident.”

He took a deep breath and sighed. “I’m sure she’ll like what she finds.”

“You don’t even know my mother.” Yet despite my opposition, I was still texting her about Andres and how I was bringing him with me to the luncheon.

Once again, I found myself justdoingthings naturally with Andres. He wasn’t my mate by a long shot. He was just really good with his mouth.

My knees wobbled. In a flash, Andres was at my side, guiding me back to the chair. I wanted so much to run away but couldn’t manage to peel away from his grip. He sat me down. He caught my phone.

“Ah, I see your dear mama has plenty to ask about my sudden appearance,” he said with notes of amusement. “Shall we clear the air?”
