She waved off whatever I was about to say. “Nope. Don’t care. Where’s the ring?”

“What?”

“The ring, Sadie. You know, the thing that usually marks an engagement?”

A heatwave splashed over my face and chest as I rubbed my neck.

Bella made a sound that I swore resembled the tell-talehonkof a goose. “Yourneck.”

Oh, right—my neck was a good enough ring, wasn’t it?

I covered the mark with my hand and shrugged into myself. “Yeah, well…”

“It looks fresh.” She pried my fingers away and whistled. “What a mouth.”

“Okay, now you’re just being a pervert.”

She wiggled her eyebrows. “You’ve been slam-dunking a super hunky architect without saying a word to anyoneandyou secured a proposal with him? Jesus, Sadie, he’s practically a billionaire. You’re set for life.”

Those words were so conclusive. For life. She made it sound like I had trapped Andres when it was actually the other way around. He had ensnared me with promises of safety, and then he kissed me until I was pliable.

Was he using me for something?

I cleared my throat and held up my hand. “I mean, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

“Do you serious already have cold feet?”

“Well…I just…” I cringed. “Is it that obvious?”

Bella frowned sympathetically. “Oh, dear. You’re a nervous wreck, huh? Is there anything I can do?” She gasped. “Am I your bridesmaid? Am I in charge?” She stood up and planted her hands on her hips.

Typical Bella wanted to be at the helm of the ship.

At least I knew things would get done that way.

She flashed her magnificent smile while holding out her hand to me. “Come on, let’s do some power poses. I’m sure that’ll help.”

“I don’t think we have enough space for—”

But who was I to stop Bella from doing anything? She’d set her mind to a task which meant it would get done.

No wonder we were best friends.

I smiled while assisting her. When we had enough space, she urged me to mimic her poses. We started with the simplest one: hands behind the head with chests puffed out.

“Breathe in and stretch as far as you can,” she guided. She croaked while holding her breath and then said, “Out we go.”

Our synchronized exhale seemed to clear the space further.

I took another breath. “Is this the part where I’m supposed to admit that I have no idea what I’m doing?”

“That’s the idea, yes.”

“And—” I swung my arms to resemble the windmill motion she was doing—“Has my mother been bothering you?”

She cackled. “You know it.”

“I’m so sorry, Bella. I should have told you first, but—”
