But Andres made the whole thing up. This is a fake relationship. Isn’t that funny? What’s even funnier is the fact that I’m nervous he’s going to leave me even though the relationship isn’t real. What a hoot, am I right?

I stared at the window ahead of us, surprised that I could still see outside with the boxes piled on the table in front of it. “I’m sorry.”

“No apology needed. You didn’t do anything wrong.” She squeaked after a huge inhalation. “But I mean, yeah, no duh. I would have liked knowing before everyone else. I am your best friend, right?”

“You’re the bestest friend.”

She beamed. “That’s good to hear.”

“Have you ever been engaged?” I pinched my lips together. If I was her best friend, I would have already known that. I was being awful. “Sorry, Bella. My brain is fried. I don’t know what I’m doing.”

She chuckled while nodding to the kitchen. Apparently, my panties were still on the floor. I closed my eyes in defeat while her chuckle turned into full laughter.

Was it still too late to hide? “Hush, Bella.”

“I’m not judging you. I’m actually a little jealous.”

I cracked my left eye open to peer at her. “You’re kidding. Miss Independent is jealous of me?”

“Well, yeah. What girl wouldn’t want someone to whisk them away to paradise?”

“Andres isn’t taking me to Bora Bora.”

She huffed in opposition. “Honey, don’t deny that man is about to take you on the most expensive honeymoon of your life.”

“He’s successful, but he’s not a billionaire, Bella.”

“Have you looked at the books?”

I couldn’t confirm that. Mostly because I hadn’t exactly asked about the numbers of his business. Success was a certainty, but that didn’t mean he was filthy rich. Just well off. Which I guessed was rich to a lot of people.

“Money isn’t even important to me,” I lied, “and it shouldn’t be to anyone.”

“Why did you take the job then?”

I lost my balance and plopped into the couch. “For the money.”

“Uh huh.”

“Don’t take that tone with me, missy.”

She smiled warmly and dropped into the cushions next to me, taking my hand. “Alright, so the money is somewhat important. Why?”

“I don’t want to live in this crummy apartment forever. I want to do something more with my life.”

“Andres is the key to that.”

Ugh, that made me sound shallow—even if it was true. “Yes, he is.”

Bella squeezed my hands. “What’s the problem then?”

“I don’t want him to leave me.”

I had to hide my true reaction from my best friend. Because there was no way in hell I was about to admit the actual terms of my engagement. And that was what shocked me the most.

It shocked me so much that I started to cry.
