I turned to Etta. “Is it me or did he stick his face into a sewing kit?”

She laughed lightly. “Dee is my best nurse. He knew how to handle the contusion.”

My heart fought to get out of my ribcage. “Contusion?”

“Take another breath—There you go—Yes, contusion. A steel beam fell through the roof and knocked Andres on the back of the neck.”

I touched the spot that had hurt just ten minutes ago. “Wow.”

“Yeah, that’s the area. And it didn’t just hit him. It pinned him. We’re not quite sure how long he was pinned.”

“Probably a few minutes.”

She hummed while checking her clipboard. “Dee noted that when Andres was admitted. How did you figure that?”

“Call it a feeling.”

“Unfortunately, the beam applied too much pressure to the spinal cord. He can’t wake up right now. He can’t even heal.”

The room tilted while my ears blasted with static. “What…how…where…?”

“Easy. Keep breathing.” Etta gently squeezed my shoulder. I heard her breathe, and then I felt my lungs open up and my mind clear. Sunny skies glittered through my hazy thoughts. “There you go. That should help.”

“Thank you, Etta.”

She sat in the chair next to me. “We’re going to keep an eye on him for the night.”

“What’s going to happen?”

“Well, with shifters, healing takes place naturally. But since the coma is blocking him from healing, we have to wait until he wakes up to determine what we can do next.”

I swallowed hard. “This is a nightmare.”

“Do you know what he was doing wandering around on the second floor? I thought the west hallway was off-limits.”

“Izdor said not to go wandering.”

The muscles around Andres’s mouth twitched.

I leaned forward. “Andres, if you heard me about Izdor, do something.”

More muscle twitches. That seemed to be getting a response out of him. Etta hopped up and dashed to the other side of the bed. “Keep saying things, Sadie.”

“Uhh, well,” I started as my brain chugged on like a locomotion running out of fuel, “that hot tub hadn’t nearly been hot enough. During our honeymoon.”

Etta maneuvered her stethoscope over Andres’s chest while casting me a curious glance. “Honeymoon? Isn’t that supposed to happen after the wedding?”

“Well, we couldn’t wait. Andres wanted us to practice.”

“I think I know what that means.”

I laughed. “We practiced one time, and I got mad about something so stupid that I just went to bed right after that.”

Andres didn’t react to that. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t hear me.

“The zoo was actually nice,” I continued. “I was upset about the interdimensional creatures at first, but I was having a good time. I ruined it with my irritated mood. I was upset over the silliest things.”

Etta tucked her stethoscope away and grabbed her clipboard from under her arm. “I need to grab a few more tonics and saline. Keep talking to him, Sadie. His mate is the best medicine he has right now.”
