Frustrated tears stole my words. I couldn’t talk anymore. I was too tired.

So, I rested my head on Andres and prayed for the best.

***

Hours went by with me snoozing on and off. Etta came back with the nurse named Dee, and Xavier came through with Leo. Spencer drifted in and said a handful of words, patted my back, and then quietly sat in solidarity with me until the sun set. Bella appeared with treats that I gobbled quickly enough to give me hiccups.

Everyone who came by gave me the kindest words and smiles (minus Spencer) along with lots of snacks. By the time I had the room to myself again, I had about a dozen sandwiches and smoothies. Strawberries sat in a container next to the bed and three bottles of sweet tea beckoned for me to drink them one after the other.

Even my mother had brought some fresh lemonade and biscuits. She had stroked Andres’s head and told him that he was responsible for coming back to have a nice, long chat with her. That didn’t make his muscles twitch like when I mentioned Izdor, but I swore I saw his eyelids flutter or something.

Maybe I was tired. Maybe I needed to go home and get some sleep.

I frowned while slumping into the chair next to the hospital bed. “I don’t have a home anymore.”

The bed creaked. “That’s not true.”

My eyes went so wide that I thought they would pop out of my skull like marbles. I stared at Andres who was sitting up in the bed with the sheets pulled up to his chest.

He groaned while rubbing his eye. “Why am Inaked?”

“Hospital protocol. You know the drill.”

“I don’t.”

I giggled nervously, grabbed a bottle of tea, and then started piling up a plate with food. Biscuits and cheese were probably the easiest thing for him.

I slid the plate onto his lap. “Etta said you weren’t healing.”

“I’m not sure.”

“Should I call her?”

He waved away the offer while dropping the sheet. His chiseled chest caught my eye, and then I was revved up hotter than a racecar engine. Weird what exhaustion didn’t quell, and one of those things was apparently arousal.

I wanted to jump his bones hard enough to send him right back into his coma. But instead, I pinched my knees together and motioned to the plate. “Well, you’re lucky. That beam could have killed you.”

“I called for you.”

My eyes burned with fresh tears. “That explains a lot.”

“What do you mean?”

“I felt the beam hit you, Andres. I felt your pain, the way your heart was breaking. Mine was too.”

His lower lip trembled. “I thought I’d never get to see you again. I thought I’d get stuck down there.”

“Down where?”

He tapped his temple. “I mean, here. I could feel you and hear you, but I couldn’t get to you. My wolf said it wasn’t time yet.”

“I’m indebted to your wolf for saving me.”

“It’s Izdor you should be thanking.”

I blinked a few tears to clear my vision. “What?”

“I could still hear things before I was totally knocked out. He was the first to respond to the collapse.”
