I spooned some soup to my lips and blew away the steam. After helping myself to a few slurps, I returned the spoon and bowl to the tray. “Is that bad?”

“I haven’t spoken to him yet.”

“Same question.”

She cut her eyes away and shrugged. “I don’t know. He’s not the talking type. I figured my mom would tell him stuff and we’d just go from there.”

“Would it make you feel better to see Leo?”

Her face lit up. “Oh, I’d love to see Leo. I haven’t seen him for a bit now.”

“I can text Xavier and tell them to come over.”

“Will Galanthia come too? Maybe we can have a dinner together or something.”

I laughed. “That much family in one day?”

She blushed a rich velvet red. “To quote you, is that bad?”

“No, but I’ll need some time with you to break up the monotony.”

“I’m sure that can be arranged.”

A kiss from her dispelled whatever anxiety I had about seeing her parents. Technically speaking, the four of us hadn’t been in the same room since the luncheon. A lot had happened since then. What if they didn’t like me anymore?

When the doorbell rang, I knew it was too late to turn back. I fixed my shirt in the mirror and went with Sadie to answer the door. We decided to keep the downstairs apartment for entertainment purposes and shifted some things around within the limits of my instructions from Etta.

Angelica floated into the room like an actress getting ready to accept an award. Behind her, Floyd popped in, looking more bored and listless than anything. Both of them greeted us with handshakes and sat down on the couch in the living room. After Sadie gathered snacks and drinks, she set them up and joined me on the couch across from her parents.

Awkward silence reigned. The air was thicker than curdled cheese, and I thought I spotted Floyd glaring a few times. It wasn’t until Sadie coughed that her parents looked more like people than statues.

“So, what’s been going on?” Sadie asked carefully. “I’m glad to see you both here. I just didn’t expect it.”

“I did say I wanted to talk to Andres,” Angelica stated, causing my heart rate to jump. “I figured I would bring Floyd—I mean, your father along to speak to him too.”

I straightened my posture and cleared my throat. “Go on.”

“We wanted to apologize for our behavior,” Floyd said to my surprise. “At the luncheon, we were pushy about you meeting people.”

Angelica nodded. “I might have made a few off comments.”

Considering a steel beam had jostled my brain around, I couldn’t really remember the luncheon in its entirety. I took their words at face value.

“I appreciate you saying so,” I said. “I don’t think I took offense to anything.”

“I’m sure Sadie already addressed it, but we wanted your engagement to distract everyone,” Angelica added. “I feel terrible for that, for putting my daughter in that position.”

I nodded. “I heard you two talked.”

“We did. And it went well.” Her breath hitched. “I think it went well.”

Sadie leaned forward with a smile. “It went well, Mom. We’ve been doing well lately.”

“I’m calling once every other day,” Angelica announced, “and texts are limited to a few times.”

“That’s great,” I praised. “I’m glad to hear it.”

Angelica turned to Sadie. “The truth is, dear, we’ve decided to finally get a divorce.”
