“Feed on anyone—and I’ll kill you.”

Since bloodletting wasn’t a part of their culture, it would be hard to come across the offer anyway.

“Come anywhere near my daughter—and I’ll kill you.”

I’d anticipated that one.

“Do we understand each other?”

I nodded.

“I asked you a question, asshole.”

I was used to being at the top of the food chain, the second-in-command of all vampires, and now I was on the bottom rung of social status. It didn’t feel good, and it provoked my ego. “Yes.”

He slammed me against the bars again before he let me go. “You’ll reside in the cottage that you stole, guards stationed outside your residence at all times. Fuck with me—and you’re dead.”

“The threats are unnecessary when I’ve agreed to be your ally.”

His eyes narrowed. “You know we’ll never be allies—not after what you did.”

“With all due respect, your daughter is fine.”

He moved into me and shoved me against the bars again. “But I’m not. If you live long enough to be a father someday, you’ll understand the mercy I’ve shown you. You’ll understand the unbelievable strength I’ve displayed.”

I would never be a father. That privilege had been taken from me—not that I’d wanted it anyway. “I betrayed an ally to spare your daughter’s life, so it’s clear I hold no ill will toward you or your people.”

“But I will always hold ill will toward you, vampire.”
