“Mhmm…what current events made you think of the neighbor from last summer?”

I sit back in my chair, and my foot bumps hers. “I guess the bestsellers list hasn’t quite left my mind. You know, the one with all those romance books? Apparently, love stories are selling more copies than the Bible.”

“Yeah, they’re quite popular.”

“I was thinking about picking one up, maybe learning a thing or two like you suggested. There was one book that caught my attention.” I hook my bait. “Coastal Fling.”

“Sounds interesting.” Lily’s head bats from side to side, her eyes chasing down the waiter.

“Maybe we can read it together?”

I’ve already read it, but she doesn’t need to know that yet. The similarities between some of the characters areverycurious.

“Why not?” She attempts to flag down a server, but her hand catches the side of my water glass, knocking it straight into my lap.

“Fuck, that’s so cold.” I lift from my chair, and stray ice cubes to fall to the floor.

“Oh, Nico. Um, here. Let me help.” She grabs the napkin off her lap and appears between my legs, dabbing the wet stain on my crotch.

I catch her wrist. “You don’t have to do that; it’s just a little wet.”

“I’m a mess.” Lily ignores me and continues to scrub the damp fabric.

“Lil, it’s fine.” I glance around the restaurant, and a few dinner guests watch us with wide eyes. Do they think she’s giving me a handy right now? I stifle a laugh. “If you wanted to be on your knees again, Lil, I would’ve taken you somewhere a little moreprivate.”

“What?” She peeks up from the edge of the table and notices the restaurant sitting front row to our hand job simulation. “Oh, for fuck’s sake.” Lily gets to her feet, holding the napkin in her hand for everyone’s curious gaze. “Nothing to see here, only a man who suffers from some premature issues. This dress—who could blame him?” She twirls back to her seat.

“You snake.” I beam.

“Hey, if they’re looking for a show, we might as well give it to them, honey.”

Another wave of laughter ruptures from me. Her confidence is priceless. Her humor too.

A waiter clears their throat. “Here’s some more napkins for you. I’ll give you a few moments and be back with your food.”

“Thank you.” I take it and cover the stain on my pants. Lily returns to sipping her champagne. “So, back to this book.”

“What’s up with you and this new romance obsession?” she says, more flustered this time. “Are you in love or something?”

Maybe? “I skimmed a part, and it made me curious. This woman gets tied up to a railing facing the ocean, and it got me thinking, have you…”

“Have I what?”

“Have you ever been hooked up to a railing?”

She snorts into her glass. “No, I’ve never beenrailedagainst a railing.”

“Maybe we can try it on the balcony sometime soon.” A firstI am happy to help her check off.

“Aren’t your friends coming to visit?” Lily empties her flute.

“What do Tara and Tate have anything to do with our outdoor fun?”

“Wouldn’t want to scare them away with your recent exhibitionist obsession.”

Checkmate.

I throw a challenging look her way. “Are you seriously considering giving in to rule number four?”
