“What about the other one?”

Donovan said, “Detective Lazlo was organizing a search of people’s rooms when I got back with the pastries. Or at least those who will let them which seems to be pretty much everyone. Mrs. Carruthers said it was a cursory search. She said it was one of those things that they were going to have to do and if they got a warrant then they would tear the place apart. She advised everyone to let the detective search their rooms.”

Shit!Flynn was on his feet immediately with Shah only a fraction of a second behind.

“Stay here,” Shah directed to Donovan. Flynn was out the door with Shah hot on his heels. “We need to get to the stuff before Lazlo.”

Flynn cursed as they came out into the hallway. They took the first set of stairs to the main floor two at a time. “Slow down. People will notice if we rush.” They immediately changed their gait. “I think we’ll need to check all the windows and doors. Do a systematic check,” Flynn said.

Shah looked at him like he was crazy and then immediately smoothed over his features. “Yes, I agree.”

Two women Flynn hadn’t seen before were coming down the stairs.

Shah smiled at them. “Good morning.” They responded in kind and kept going.

Once they hit the landing, they went down the hall and turned right and then took the left into the newer section where Shah’s room was just a few doors down from Flynn’s. As they turned the corner they came to a halt. Lazlo, Jason, and Harper were standing in the middle of the hallway.

“I hear you’re conducting a search,” Flynn stated. “A heads up might have been nice.”

Jason gave him a tight smile. “I asked for permission from the club members as I interviewed them and they said yes.”

Flynn kept his temper in check. So that was how it was going to be.Big mistake.

“I see.” He glanced at Lazlo who gave him a blank stare just for a second before his expression went soft and he looked like a big kid again. There was definitely something going on with Lazlo. He was not what he seemed.

“So, did you find anything?” Shah asked.

“Not so far,” Jason admitted. “We still have a few rooms left on this floor and some on the next.”

“Oh, yes?” Shah asked.

“We would like to search yours, Flynn’s, Mrs. Carruthers and Gina’s on this hallway.”

Jason gestured toward Flynn’s door. “If you wouldn’t mind.”

Flynn smiled coldly. “But I would. And so would Shah, Mrs. Carruthers, and Gina. You will not be searching those rooms.”

Jason’s eyes narrowed. “Why? Do you have something to hide?”

“No.” Flynn stood there with his arms folded across his chest.

Jason rolled up onto the balls of his feet. “I thought you wanted this investigation to go forward. We can’t solve this poor girl’s murder without cooperation.”

“So you got the autopsy back then?” Flynn asked.

Jason blinked. “No, but we’re proceeding on the assumption—”

“Not good enough. You’ve been abusing our cooperation. Now it’s over.” Flynn wasn’t budging an inch.

“You know I can get a warrant to search the premises.”

Flynn snorted. “You couldn’t come close and you know it. You don’t even know if it is murder at this point and, even if you did, you don’t know what you’re looking for, do you?”

Jason tried to play it off. “That’s not true. We—”

“You do have the cause of death then?” Shah asked.

“Well no,” Jason admitted, “but—”
