I mean business, and it’s time to take charge of my own life. Well, as much as I can when I’m trapped in WITSEC in a safe house God knows where, with absolutely no resources at my disposal.

But hey, you’d be surprised what a woman can do when she’s backed against a wall.

Fuck you, Jason. Fuck you!

That's my new mantra.

You don’t get to win.

GHOST

I can play this game, Rocket.

If you want to show up here telling me some load of bullshit and then expect me to fully trust you, then you are stupider than I thought. I’ll pretend to be on the same team for now, until I get a handle on what the hell is going on behind the scenes. For Cassie’s purpose, she needs to think that the people who put her in this house have this all under control, but in the last fifteen minutes, I’ve just learned that nothing is under control, and the only person on my team is me. I know I could call Bull and he would be here in a flash, but I don’t want to involve him in this. I have a feeling it’s bigger than we expect, and it's about to blow up in our faces.

“You both know that the senator is out on bail and using any media outlet he can to claim his innocence in any wrongdoing that he has been charged with. What you wouldn’t know is that his legal team has just presented to the prosecution a bundle of documents that implicate his assistant Camilla and that this was all her doing. She is the person who has been breaking the laws, using his access to sensitive documents, and then framing him. She is being arrested as we speak.

“Bullshit!” Cassie bursts out. “He was fucking her behind my back, and the stupid woman actually loved him, I could tell in the way she talked about him. He’s using her as the pawn. Surely, they can see that.” She's already getting worked up, and we have only just started.

“That’s not for us to worry about. We aren’t the FBI. Our job is to keep you safe, not to solve the case,” Rocket says, trying to cool Cassie down.

“But if he gets off and is out free, then it is your problem. Because I will never be safe and never able to leave this suffocating situation.”

My gut drops a little, and even though my rational brain tells me she isn’t talking about me, it still jars me.

“Maybe so, but we will deal with that in due course. Now, more importantly, we need to talk about the message that I was to relay. The prosecution wanting to bring you to Washington is not normal. So, who wants you there and why?”

“I think we know why,” she mumbles under her breath. Cassie looks at me, and I can see the reality of where we’re at dawning on her.

“The other thing I have managed to find out is that they are expediting the trial so they can show that the senator is innocent, and he can get on with his job. Camilla can be locked up, and life will be all rosy again. A perfect world, apparently.” Sarcasm is practically dripping off his tongue.

“So, what do we do?” Cassie’s voice is weaker now, and I can tell she is losing the fighting spirit she had a little while ago.

“Keep you out of Washington, that’s for sure.” Rocket is looking at me for guidance now. I may have misjudged him a little, but I’m sticking to my instincts and not trusting a soul.

“When are they expecting us to move her?” My mind is on overdrive, making plans but not giving anything away.

“Five days from now. That gives them time to get Camilla in custody, her charges to hit the media, and for us to believe that it’s a mere formality to bring Cassie back and ask her questions on what she knows about Camilla.”

“I don’t know anything about her except that she's a whore, who willingly cheated with my boyfriend while keeping me doing as I was told, to look perfect in public. I mean, what if she was involved too, that they were doing it together? Or maybe he's hanging her out to dry, framing an innocent person?” When she drops her head into her hands, I want to console her, but it’s too risky to give anything away. “I don’t want to be involved in this…” she whispers. I can see her mind trying to process all she is learning.

She looks up at me with pleading eyes. “Ghost… What if he tries to implicate me too? If he can do it to her, he could do it to me too.”

Before I can answer, Rocket is already talking. “You’re right, he could. But we will try to keep you safe from that.”

“There is no fucking trying!” my voice booms into the room.

“Cassandra, you are safe with me. I won’t let that poor excuse for a human anywhere near you. Or anyone else, for that matter.” I glare at Rocket so he gets the message too.

I'd already had the same thought as Cassie, and I now know what I need to do. From the moment I knew the details for this case, I had a possible outcome in mind, and now my fears are coming to fruition. Money and status mean power, and power means they play dirty. Well, I can play this game too. But the one advantage I’ve got is that I have what they want, and they aren’t getting her.

If they can’t find her, then they can’t have her. I can stay one step ahead of them. Rocket thinks I didn’t know about Camilla, but he forgets who I am and what I’m capable of. I've seen the documents that have been presented to the prosecuting team. To be honest, it didn’t surprise me. I didn’t expect Jason to take this lying down. With the kinds of people he deals with, they won’t want any of their names to be exposed. So, either they help get him off or they kill him. It’s that simple. You play on the dirty side of the world, and you are only a breath away from taking a bullet at any moment. That’s the choice you make when you step over the line. Everyone is disposable.

I need to get rid of Rocket so I can think, to plan what my next move is. I need to get on the computer and dig deeper. Find out where the mole in the system is.

“I understand what’s going on now. Thank you for coming, but I know you need to get back. If you're offline for too long, then people will get suspicious, and that’s the last thing we need.”

I can see Rocket is torn between wanting to stay and work through a plan but knowing I’m right and he needs to leave. He has been here long enough.
