“We will work this out, Cassandra.” He puts his hand on her shoulder as he stands. She shivers from the touch. He hasn’t won her over yet, and that's a good thing. The only person she needs to trust is me.

“Thank you,” she quietly replies as she stands too. “I’m going to head to my room for a while, Ghost.”

I nod to her. I don’t know if she’s doing it on purpose to give me time to talk to Rocket or if she is just overwhelmed again.

I hold my arm to the side, signaling to Rocket that he should start walking toward the back door, and I follow after.

We walk in silence until we reach the car.

“Thanks for the intel. I’ll see what I can find out.” I keep my tone of voice flat, not giving anything away.

“Don’t do anything stupid, Ghost,” Rocket bluntly says to me.

“I’m not going to.”

“Bullshit. You might think you’re fooling her—and me, for that matter—but I can tell you, we are both on to you. I’ve known you for too long. I can read you, even when you think I can’t.”

“Whatever,” I say. One-word answers are harder to get anything from.

“How long you been fucking her?”

Before he can even take his next breath, I have his shirt screwed up in my fist and his body pinned against the car. “Don’t you dare speak about Cassandra like that.” I grit my teeth, trying not to punch the living shit out of a man I considered a close friend until today.

“You don’t need to answer me, Ghost. Your reaction tells me what I already guessed. Now back the fuck off or I’ll have you pulled from this case quicker than you can blink.”

Dropping my fists and restraining my anger takes every bit of will power I have. “Don’t even think about it.”

As I turn to walk away from him, he continues talking, his words echoing all around me.

“How could you be so stupid, Ghost. What were you thinking?”

Continuing to walk away, in a voice low enough he can’t hear me, all I can answer to myself is the truth. “That my life will no longer exist without her in it. She’s mine.”

Stomping up the back steps toward the door, I hear his car door open and close. Standing with my hand on the doorknob, I don’t open it until I hear his car start moving on the gravel, turning around and heading out the driveway.

Taking a deep breath, I drop my head to lean on the door.

Fuck!

I’ve just put both Cassie and myself in danger by letting him know we’re involved. Today has just become one big clusterfuck.

Trying to get my head around everything before I go back inside, I reach for my phone. My finger hovers over Bull’s number. I want to press the call button. I need someone to talk to and to help me. As I’m about to push the button, I hear her voice.

“Ghost?” The fragility in her tone tells me what I need to do.

I push my phone back in my pocket. Sorry, Bull, I need to do this one my own. It’s safer that way.

Opening the screen door and stepping inside, I see Cassie standing in the kitchen with her arms wrapped around her body, looking as petrified as she did the first day I met her.

“I’m here, baby. He’s gone.” Stepping to her, her body falls into mine, the tears start flowing, and I feel my girl breaking in my arms.

“I’ve got you. You’re safe with me.”

Now I just need to work out how to guarantee what I’m promising.

Time is of the essence for me to get my plan into motion, but I can’t leave Cassie until she feels comfortable with what’s happening. We need to talk, but standing in the kitchen is not the place.

“Let me turn the cameras back on and get the loops playing so nothing looks out of the ordinary. Then we'll talk.” I place my fingers under her chin and lift it up so she's looking at me.
