“Because you are a man of honor. I haven’t threatened you in any way, I just need help,” I say, keeping my voice calm, hoping it will pull him in.

“Crusher, give him your car.” It isn’t a question, and I get the impression whichever one is Crusher would know better than to argue.

“Thank you.” I place the cash on the table in front of me, and his hands slide out and take it, passing it to his second to count it. He nods at him that it’s all there.

Before I have time to say anything, the guy next to me, the muscle that has been trying to intimidate me the whole time, holds out keys.

“Green Dodge out front.” His words are blunt and straight forward.

“I see it, it’s fine,” Cassie’s voice whispers in my ear. I had forgotten for a moment she was listening in. I try not to react at how smart my girl is.

“Blue Toyota, and I need it gone as soon as we leave. I’ll leave the keys in the ignition.”

“Deal.” The boss nods at me to let me know we’re finished.

Taking no time, I turn on my heel and I’m straight out the door. The moment I break into the bright sunshine, I start sucking in the clean air again and breathing better. Seeing Cassie safe and sound, my stomach relaxes a little, but to be honest, I won’t relax until we are long gone from here.

Jumping into the Dodge and starting it up, the motor purrs like a kitten. Thank fuck. I drive it straight to where Cassie is parked and place it between the Toyota and the bar, so they won’t get a clear look of Cassie or the gear we have. I hear the phone call disconnect in my ear as she moves to open the door and get out. I leave the Dodge motor running just in case we need to leave halfway through moving bags.

“Grab my bag on the backseat and get in the truck. I’ll get the rest.” She understands by the tone in my voice that this isn’t to be questioned. That bag is the most important one we have. It’s got my technology, cash, and enough weapons to keep us safe and get us out of any situation we get stuck in. We haven’t used any of Cassie’s cash that she took out of her bank account when she ran from Jason. This is the emergency money I keep hidden in my go-bag. Cash can get you out of many situations in life. I have plenty of it to spare, and I will take care of her with it. The rest of the bags I’m loading are handy but not vital to staying alive like my go- bag is.

Not answering me, Cassie just does as I ask. She pulls the seatbelt over her shoulder as I jump back into the driver’s seat. I floor it out of the parking lot, gravel spraying, and thank God it doesn’t hit any of the precious bikes all lined up. That would have been like signing a death warrant.

As soon as we reach the edge of town, I pull over to the side of the road.

“What’s wrong?” Cassie asks, grabbing my arm.

“We’re fine. Just swapping license plates.” Her eyes almost pop out of her head as she watches me pull new plates out of my go-bag.

Not waiting to explain, I’m out with the screwdriver, replacing them and throwing the old ones off into the long grass along the edge of the road. Truth be told, they were probably stolen anyway. I’m not taking any risks.

As I get back in the car and pull out again, she starts to giggle a nervous laugh.

“What else have you got in that Mary Poppins bag of yours?” Looking over at her, we start to laugh. Not because her joke was that funny, but it’s a release of the tension that we’re both carrying.

“Oh, you’d be surprised what tricks I have up my sleeve, young lady,” I say, trying to keep the moment a little lighter than the last few hours have been.

“If they’re anything like the magic you have in your pants, then I’m all for it.” Tears are rolling down her cheeks, and I know they are partly from laughing but the rest are scared tears.

Placing my hand on her thigh, I squeeze it firmly. “Remember, you can trust me. I’ll keep you safe.”

She takes a big deep breath, her tears slowing. “I do,” she says, placing her hand over mine and giving me a timid smile.

Driving now in silence, we’re both deep in our thoughts. I know what I’m doing and making plans in my head. While I don’t know what she’s thinking, I’m positive she’s just trying to keep herself calm and convincing herself to trust me. She says she does, and in her head, she thinks she does. But I need her to feel it so deeply in her bones, so without any doubt, it’s an instinct her body feels, just like it understands how to breathe without being told.

After we’ve been driving for a while, it gives her time to settle. I’m thankful that Crusher at least had a full tank of fuel for me. My mind has put all the action plan together, and it’s time to focus on Cassie again. I had to push her out of my thoughts which sounds crazy when she is sitting right next to me, but there are times for both of our safety when my pinpoint focus will be what keeps us alive.

“You need to eat.” In my head I said that a lot softer than the gruffness I just heard come out.

“So do you!” she spits back at me, and if I’m honest, I deserve it.

There must be something fucked up in my make-up, because her standing up to me and not taking my shit is such a turn-on. Now isn’t even the time to be thinking about sex but someone should have told my dick that.

“Touché.” My remark takes the edge off her scowl, but only slightly.

I can see her hesitating to say something, it’s like she is throwing it around her head, and every time she almost says it, she changes her mind.

“Spit it out, what’s wrong?” I’m getting ready for the onslaught of abuse or concern about the last few hours or the way I just spoke to her, but I couldn’t be any further from the truth.
