I can't give her more than that. If she's stupid enough to come back here after this, that's on her. “Deal.”

“You drive a hard bargain.”

“But you know I'm worth it.”

“You are worth everything. Every little bit, and I'm going to make you see that.”

I try to smile, but I'm not convinced. I just need to enjoy this while it lasts.

“I know you don't believe it, but I promise to pamper you until you believe it.”

“Yay, pampered for the rest of my life.” Unless he means until he ends my life.

Knox nods and turns to the view from the balcony. Obviously not noticing how dark my thoughts have turned. It's amazing how far I can see without a fence. My view has never looked so free.

“What would I do all day, you know, while you're working?”

“Anything you want. Dance, swim, jog. There's a lake if you want to go fishing. I’d feel better if you took one of my men, you're a little accident prone.”

“For someone who can dance, it's hard to believe, huh!” I have two left feet until I grip that pole.

“When we're working, we enter a zone. The rest of the world doesn't matter, and we can do anything in the world. We can dance around a pole, we can…”

He doesn't tell me the mafia equivalent of dancing, so I'll add murder in my head.

“Can we find out how Mum is doing?” I got distracted yesterday with everything and forgot to call. It was for the best, but I want to at least check that she arrived safely.

Knox glances at his watch, then his gaze drifts off into the distance. “Sure.”

“Thanks.” I've lost his attention, having it stolen from me by his decision to accept my bargain. In a way, I hope this similarity between our sisters will help Annie out of this mess she's in. That should give me enough incentive to leave him to his thoughts, but I want his attention. I never have moments like this where I can sit and enjoy, there is always housework, training, or mum… There is always something. Now there is nothing and I want there to be him.

“Knox-”

“Yeah, I'll get you a phone.”

“I wasn't… I wanted to check… Are you OK?”

“I'm fine. I don't often think about Carrie.”

Lifting up from my chair, I crawl my way across into his lap. “Do you want to think about her?”

“You are trying to be naughty!” Knox chuckles, lifting my head towards his.

“Maybe.” I shrug innocently. “Can you blame me?”

“Not at all.”

I purse my lips and lean forward. I need to feel his kiss, to know the passion is there. This has to be about more than just sex. His hands fumble with the waist of my trousers and I make the biggest mistake of my life.

“Take me on a date.”

“What?” Knox pushes me back, a serious stiffness coming over him. “You want to go on a date?”

“Yes. You're asking a lot of me to give up my life to live as a pet in paradise. I want a date. I want to go home; I want to wear my own clothes and I want you to pick me up and take me on a date.”

“I'm already giving you everything with your sister.” He reminds me.

“You're offering my life for her life. I want your heart for my heart.”
