“No fucking way. A spliff would be good though.”

“Why the fuck not?” Jesse got up and nodded at Xander. “Get him some crutches from the basement. And some weed. I got to check on the dogs.”

“Who’s a better patient, me or them?” Dante joked.

“The dogs, no question. They don’t talk back.”

Jesse left and Xander got Dante the crutches he needed. And some pot. He was gonna sleep good tonight.

Dante made his way, slowly, out of their compound and across the road to Sage’s.

As he dragged his ass up the driveway, he noticed one of the farm hands was busy feeding the llamas, and two other men were picking the apple trees. Dante stopped and gave a wave.

But there was no sign of Sage.

He motioned for one of the workers to come over. “Where’s Sage?”

“She’s out in the barn.” The man pointed to the north end of the property.

“Thanks.”

The man walked back to his ladder and got back to work.

Dante kept going, walking along the path that led to the barn. He could hear someone talking – swearing – and smiled when he recognized the husky voice. His woman was mad as hell at something and cursing up a storm.

When he finally made it to the entrance to the barn, he looked inside to find Sage, her back to him. She was wearing tight blue jeans, a baggy black hoodie, and rubber boots. With a shovel in hand, she was scooping up (from the look and smell) horse shit.

Not exactly the reunion he had in mind, but hey, he wasn’t prince charming and this sure as fuck was not a fairy tale.

“Are you gonna shovel that shit all day or finally talk to me?” Dante yelled out.

Sage spun around, her dark hair whipping around her face. She looked like she hadn’t sleep well in days.

Join the club…

Placing the shovel aside, Sage removed her gloves and sauntered up to him.

“Was all that stuff about you lovin’ me something that my drugged-up mind imagined or did you mean what you said?” Dante asked.

Sage propped her hands on her hips and kept walking. When she finally got close enough, he saw the pain in her eyes. Her fire was gone and that just wasn’t right.

“I meant what I said but,” she paused and bit her lip. “After everything that happened, I needed a few days to process. And you needed rest.”

“I’m rested,” Dante snapped.

“But not fully healed. You realize you could pull your stitches by walking so far, right? Why are you such a pig-headed man?” she hissed.

“Why are you such a stubborn pain in my ass?” Dante retaliated. “Jesus, woman! If you’d respond to my messages, I wouldn’t have to haul myself over here! And the fuck, Sage? I finally admit I have feelings for you and then you go and do a runner.”

“I did not run! I’m right here. And you never told me how you felt.”

“I fucking love you!”

They both stared at each other, shocked by Dante’s admission.

“I love you too. But I had work that needed tending. As you can clearly see.” She pointed to the shovel.

“I can smell it too,” Dante quipped, lightening the mood.
