“I’m fine,” he bit out and pulled his arm away. “Keep walking.”

Dante hated showing any kind of fear. And in front of Sage of all people.

She stared at him with understanding in her hazel eyes and something powerful flashed between them. Then she turned and Dante wondered if he’d imagined the whole thing.

Forcing off his hesitation, he followed Sage and Avery the rest of the way down until they reached a set of doors.

Avery paused in front of door number one. “You still sure you want to do this?”

Sage nodded.

Avery opened it and stepped inside.

The unmistakable scent of copper and burnt flesh hit his nose full force. Sage put her hand up to her mouth and covered her nose.

Sonny stepped into view, his hands in black gloves, blood stains covering his jeans and t-shirt.

His wicked smile and the gleam in his eyes told Dante that he’d enjoyed his work tonight.

“Welcome to my office.” He motioned for them to enter. “Don’t mind the mess. It comes with the territory.”

Truer words were never spoken.

SAGE

Everything in Sage’s body screamed at her to turn around.

Go back.

Sage was surrounded by the overwhelming smell of blood, ammonia, and sweat. And something sickly sweet that she couldn’t identify but that made her gag.

It was so damp and cold down here in the bunker. Between the darkness of the tunnels and the smell, it reminded Sage of all those horror movies she and Rosemary used to watch. They would scream and hold each other through the scary parts.

Only this time, the scare was real. So were the bodies.

And there was no one, save for Dante, for Sage to hold onto. She felt the heat of his body as he stood behind her, then a warm, reassuring hand at the small of her back.

The man hated to receive her comfort, but it was okay for him to give it to her.

The only source of light down here came from a few bulbs that hung from the ceiling.

That wasn’t the only thing hanging…

Two bodies were tied up, their hands bound with thick rope, their feet barely touching the ground. Another rope lay loose around their necks. They were still moving so she felt intense relief followed by apprehension.

The closer Sage walked inside the room, the clearer the recognition.

Cameron Hallsey, minus his glasses, had cuts on his arms and face and was blinking through the drips of blood that fell down over his forehead.

The woman strung up beside him was Naria, the stripper Sage had tailed.

She was in rough shape too.

Sage had a moment’s regret and then recalled the body of her sister lying cold and unrecognizable in the morgue.

“Cameron and Naria are finally ready to share with us,” Sonny announced as he stepped around and picked up a hunting knife from the stainless-steel table set off to the side. He walked over to Cameron and held the knife to his temple, close to his left eye. “Talk, Mr. Government Liaison Officer. Tell us everything you know.”
