“He’s not bad, that one.” I nod towards my future son-in-law who’s standing in the corner talking to some people I don’t recognize. They invited just under a hundred people and most of them RSVP’d they were coming, so I anticipate quite a few people I’ve never met. Wes’ eyes look up and find Raegan and I almost feel like I’m intruding on the look they share so I turn away from her just as he makes his way over to us.

“Avery.” I nod, turning my attention towards her. “You look beautiful.”

I see the faint pink in Avery’s cheeks and she gives me a smile that isn’t the usual smile she gives me when I compliment her. It’s shy and polite and yet it still makes my dick hard. My fingers touch her elbow as I lean down to press a kiss to her cheek and I hear the sharp intake of breath as she stiffens against me.

“Thanks, Theo.” She narrows her eyes playfully and moments later she’s blocked from my vision as Lucas scoops her into his arms and lifts her off the ground.

“There she is.” He sets her down after no more than a moment and I try not to pay too much attention to them to avoid getting jealous of his hands on her.

“Hey, Lucas.” She returns his hug. “Not like you to be late,” she says, taking a peek at the gold watch on her arm.

He scoffs. “I am not late.”

“Your mother beat you here, I’d say you’re late.” She scrunches her nose and he puts his hand up.

I slowly move away from them, not wanting to feel like an awkward third wheel, and make my way to the bar set up in the corner. I’ve just ordered a scotch when I feel a hand on my shoulder. “How ya doing, Theo?” I turn to see Avery’s father, Shawn, giving me a curious look. “I don’t know what it’s like to have my only daughter get married, but I imagine it’s a little tough.” He nods towards where Wes and Raegan are taking pictures. “You like him?”

“Yeah, he’s a good guy and he really seems to love her.”

“You good with the age thing?” He says and I hope the universe is getting a kick out of forcing me to have this conversation with my girlfriend’s father. My eyes find her instantly like they’re trained to do it.

“Yeah,” I tell him honestly. “It was a little difficult at first, but all a father wants for his daughter is for her to be happy.” I take a sip of my drink before turning back to him, selfishly hoping that one day he’ll have those same thoughts about his own daughter.

“Well, I’m happy for you, and Rae is glowing.”

“There you are, finally I’ve been looking for you!” Rebecca’s voice rings through the air just as she comes to stand next to me. “The photographer wants us to take pictures with Raegan and Lucas.” I give her a look and then down at the dress she’s wearing.

“What?” She asks, her brows furrowing like she’s already annoyed.

“Why are you wearing white?”

“Umm hello, I’m not. This is cream.” She looks down at herself and then back up at me as if to sayobviously.

I narrow my eyes at her, disappointed at the thought that even on one of the most important days of her daughter’s life, she couldn’t resist making it about her. “Looks white.”

“Because you know nothing about fashion! God,” she looks at Shawn. “You should have seen how he dressed before I got to him.” She giggles and I take a sip of my drink, not nearly drunk enough to deal with her bullshit. “But anyway, pictures with her parents? You know, both of us? Come to think of it, I don’t think the four of us have many pictures,” she says with passive aggression dripping from her words.

Because you were never around?I think and Shawn clears his throat, giving me a look like he had the exact same thought. “Rebecca.” He nods with a polite smile.

“Shawn! How are you?” She touches his shoulder. “Great to see you.” She flashes her flirtatious smile that she uses on every man she encounters.

“You as well and I’m great. How are you?”

“Never better!” She gushes and I roll my eyes internally at her usual response.

He nods at me as if to saygood luckbefore he slips away.

“Do not wear anything white…or white adjacentto her wedding, Rebecca. Contrary to what I’msureyou’re thinking, the day is not about you,” I tell her as I begin walking towards Raegan who’s now with Lucas and Avery.

She scoffs from behind me. “Can you go five seconds without being a dick to me?”

I turn around before we get to our kids and I’m grateful there isn’t anyone close enough to hear us. “I don’t know. Can you go five seconds without being a narcissist?” I don’t wait for her response before I keep moving towards Raegan and Lucas and yet they can both sense it as soon as I reach them.

“Ah, it feels like old times.” Lucas chuckles as he takes in my annoyed expression.

“Your mom says we should take pictures,” I say, ignoring my son’s usual comedic response to our arguing.

“Yes, the four of us hardly have any!” She says as she links her arm with Raegan and pulls her towards the corner where they were previously taking pictures.
