Zachary did this to me? My head spun with the implications of that. I thought he cared about me. He came to me to say he wasn't getting involved…
He fucking lied. Everything he said was bullshit. That whole time, he was there on Chloe's behalf. He was working with her or for her. The only thing he said that was honest was that the teddy bear would help me sleep. He meant it when he said goodbye.
He knew when he left that the bear contained a booby-trap meant to kill me.
No wonder Hunter thought the conversation with Chloe was funny. She must have been pissed when she learned she failed. She'd tried to kill me, but I survived. I was stronger than that. I'd make a full recovery and then I'd go after her.
"You know too, don't you?" Slade asked. "Someone was in your room?"
He looked ready to rip their arms off and strangle them with them. Teddy bear or no teddy bear, he was furious at the idea of someone being in my room and him not knowing about it.
Hunter looked equally unimpressed. He and Parker knew about Zachary, but neither of them were fans of my former stepbrother. When they found out what he did…
I managed to nod in spite of the mask.
"You can tell us as soon as the doctor lets you take that off," Parker said.
Hunter looked to the side.
"What? I can be the voice of reason once in a while," Parker protested. "The most important thing here is that Lila gets better. We can worry about revenge later."
"Right." Hunter looked back at me. "It will be sweeter after they've stewed for a while anyway. Let them think we aren't coming after them. When they least expect it." He grinned. "We'll fuck them so hard they'll wish they hadn't touched you."
He sounded like he was very much looking forward to doing just that. Hell had no fury like me and one of my guys when someone fucked with us.
"Didn't you two say something about having exams?" Slade asked. "Go and get something to eat and get them done. You're not going to help Lila if you fail."
He stepped over to the other side of me and brushed hair back off my forehead. "Don't worry about yours, you can take it when you're better."
"Don't you have a class to teach?" Hunter asked.
"Not until after lunch," Slade replied. "I'll stay with Lila until then."
Both twins hesitated before Hunter nodded. "We'll be back as soon as the exam is over." He leaned over and kissed my cheek.
Parker shoved him out of the way and did the same.
I turned my head to watch them step out of the room.
"You're safe with me," Slade said softly.
I held his gaze. I wanted to believe him. Ididbelieve him, but I believed the same of Zachary. Now, I realised how naïve that was. It never crossed my mind he might do anything like this to me.
I trusted him.
I trusted him and he tried to kill me. All this time he was on Chloe's side and I didn't have a clue. Did Dane know? How could he not?
"We got lucky," Slade said. His expression was closed except for a hint of suppressed emotion in his eyes. He was also used to being in control of himself and those around him, to keeping himself guarded against the world. I suspected if he was with anyone else he wouldn't let it even slip this far.
I frowned at him.
"If the twins hadn't found you in time, we would have lost you. Yeah, we haven't known each other for long, but losing you would…" He cleared his throat.
