“Well, you can complain to me all you want.”

She arched a brow at him. “You’ll get sick of hearing me bitch and complain.”

“Nah,” he assured her. “You’ve got a nice voice. I like hearing you talk.”

“Is that why you sat outside of my cabin door every day? Because you like to hear me talk?”

“To be fair, you barely talked to me at all during those days.”

“I am not apologizing for that. You made that choice all by yourself.”

He chuckled. “At first, I did it because it’s my job. Then I think I just liked the challenge of making you talk through the door.”

“You must not lead a very exciting life if talking through a door was the height of entertainment for you.”

“My life is exciting enough. You’re underestimating how interestingyouare.”

“Don’t try to flatter me.” Her cheeks burned bright red, and she turned her head toward the window, hoping he wouldn’t see her blushing so deeply.

A simple compliment like that shouldn’t make her heart beat faster, but it did. But maybe it was the memory of those two kisses that made her blush.

They were hard kisses to forget.

“How long until we get to NYC?” she asked.

“A few days. Actually, I’ve got a job for you. Find us a hotel to stay in tonight.”

“We could just take turns driving and sleeping.”

He shot her an incredulous look. “Do you really think it’s a good idea to get to your sister, wherever she is, completely exhausted?”

“No,” she conceded with a sigh. “Probably not. I’ll find us a hotel.”

“Thanks, Val,” he said. “Sleeping in this truck isn’t exactly comfortable.”

And no wonder. Nero was well over six feet tall with wide shoulders. Even in the massive cab, he looked big. The kind of big that made Valentine wonder what it would be like to use him as a pillow.

A muscular wolf pillow.

TEN

NERO

“I’ll take the couch,” Nero announced as they walked into the last available hotel room in town. Of course, there would be a comic book convention in the town where they were stopping for the night.

“We can keep driving,” Valentine offered. “Maybe we’d have better luck in the next town over.”

He frowned. “Do you really want to keep driving for an hour just to have your own bed? Besides, you will have a bed ’cause I am taking the couch.”

She shook her head. “No. You’re massive.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“All I mean is that you’re taller. You should take the bed. I can curl up on the sofa, no problem.”

“Not a chance,” he growled.

He might have promised to keep his hands and his mouth to himself, but there was no way in hell he was going to make his mate sleep on the couch like she didn’t matter.
