Nero snapped at her feet with his jaws, but the effect was ruined by one little fact. Val knew he wouldn’t actually bite her. He might be mad at her for not listening to him, but he wouldn’t hurt her. It just wasn’t in him.

Yet, he was big enough of a wolf to herd her back to the wall. He was growling at her, wordlessly telling her to climb up, when all her attention was captured by the woman running toward them.

“Lil!” Valentine cried, running toward her sister.

“You need to go before Nikolas comes out and destroys you both,” her sister snapped.

“Not a chance! Come with us!”

“I can’t,” Lilliane said. “Even if I wanted to, I can’t.”

“Why?”

“It’s better this way. Trust me. I’m doing this for you and Ceecee.”

“But we’reyourbig sisters. If there is anything that needs to be done, we should do it.”

Lilliane rolled her eyes. “It’s not that easy. You need to go.”

“Then I’m staying here with you,” Val said, crossing her arms.

This made Nero growl low, but Valentine just dug her heels in.

“Stop barking at me, Nero. You can’t tell me what to do.”

Lilliane glanced between the two of them and shook her head. “If I go with you for one week, oneweek, you need to let me go after.”

Valentine felt her heart clench. One week was plenty of time. In that amount of time, she could convince Lilliane to stay. She could get her to tell her the truth about what was happening here. “Fine.”

“Okay.” Lilliane looked back over her shoulder. “But he won’t be happy.”

“Nikolas?” Val waved her off. “I don’t think he knows how to be happy. It must have died inside of him when he became a vamp.”

Lil’s nostrils flared, but she looked back at the house. “Yeah. Something like that,” she whispered. It was cryptic, but Val would press her about it later.

Lilliane grabbed her phone and texted something quickly. Valentine looked over her sister’s shoulder to see the message.

I’ll be back in seven days. Don’t worry. I WILL be back. I won’t break my promise, so don’t break yours.

It was weird as hell, but not as weird as the name at the top of the screen.

Lord.

That was it. Just one word and no clue as to who this contact in her phone was.

Lord.

Ominous and kind of creepy.

Lord.

Like something out of a fucking nightmare.

The response soon came as if Lord … whoeverthatwas … had been waiting for a message:Or else.

Two words. Chilling and terrible, but Lilliane didn’t even seem fazed by the threat.

Valentine would grill her sister when they were safe in her cabin with a mountain of ice cream and waffles fromTails and Syrup. There would be all the time in the world to get everything out of Lilliane.
