The only thing she could think to do was go over that wall and help him. After all, they were only here because of her and her desperate need to save her sister from herself.

Maybe I’m not dumb. Just loyal.

There. That was better.

She wasn’t risking her life for nothing. It was for her beloved sister and best friend and the only man who had ever managed to spark her heart to life. Holding on to this with all herinternalstrength, Valentine strained with all herphysicalstrength to scale the wall.

She was careful when she climbed over. She had a few scrapes and bruises, and she might regret this little jaunt later.

But her sister was here.

She could feel it.

Once over the wall with a few layers of skin missing from her palms and knees, Val looked around the sprawling grounds. It was similar to the Longborn estate she grew up on. The only difference was the sheer size.

This place was much, much,muchbigger.

She slunk down as low as she could as she made her way to the house. She scanned her surroundings, but it was only when she began to look up at the house that she saw it.

Nero’s bare ass was hanging out the window.

She narrowed her eyes at the sight, half angry and worried that he was just hanging up there for everyone to see. Hadn’t he told her this was dangerous? Didn’t he think that letting it all hang out … literally … would be a bad way to rescue her sister?

Impatient and scared, Valentine stood under him. “Nero! What are you doing up there?” she kept her voice level. Not a shout, but still loud enough to be heard.

Her mistake, of course, was not realizing how quiet their surroundings were. Even her little words seemed loud enough to start an avalanche.

Nero glared down at her, confusing the hell out of her.

And that’s when she heard it … Lilliane gasping in fear.

Her sister was up there!

“Bring her down!” she called. “Lil! Come!”

Nero jumped down from the window, and in the middle of his jump … fall? … he turned into his wolf. He landed on his feet and nudged her back toward the wall with snapping teeth. It didn’t do anything to help Val’s confusion.

A cloaked figure stuck its head out of the same window, and despite the heavy hood, she would have recognized that face anywhere.

It was Nikolas.

One of the vampire council members who had tried to marry Celestine to make some kind of alliance. Val had been meant to take her sister’s place as the second eldest, but Lilliane had intervened and taken her spot instead.

At that moment, all of Valentine’s fears became very real.

Her sister had been forced … or would be forced … to marry a council member. She would never see her again.

Unless they got her out of there now.

Right now.

Nero tried to run Valentine back to the wall, but she was putting up one hell of a fight. She didn’t want to go without Lilliane. Her sister was here! If she could just talk to her, she could convince her to leave.

Nikolas wouldn’t allow that, of course.

He might not be able to chase them as the sun was high up in the sky, but that didn’t mean Nikolas was powerless. The smart thing would be to get back to the truck and drive the hell away from there.

But … here’s where Val wasn’t too clear … shouldn’t they use the sun to their advantage and mount an attack to break out Lilliane whether she wanted to come or not?
