But what more could there be?

Wasn’t agreeing to marry Nikolas’s son … a vampire none of the Longborn sisters knew … bad enough?

“So,” Ceecee said. “Let me get this straight. Your would-be father-in-law comes here to take you back to your fiancé, and your sister kills him instead?”

Val squeaked in shock as her role in the whole thing was brought up so quickly. “He was going to kill me,” she said lamely.

“No, shit! You stole his son’s bride. Nikolaswouldbe pissed. I’m not saying that you did anything wrong. Better him than you, but this is bad.” Celestine turned to Reece. “It’s bad, isn’t it?”

“It’s bad,” Reece and Nero spoke at the same time. Nero added, “But no matter what, we’re prepared to face whatever the vamp council throws our way.”

“The vamps are big on an eye for an eye,” Celestine said.

“Of course they are,” Nero grumbled. He draped his arm over Val’s shoulders, and it was only then she realized she was shivering with fear. He kissed her temple, and to her shock, no one but Lilliane was thrown by this.

“Oh, right. How could I forget?” the youngest Longborn snorted. She threw her hands up in the air in defeat before collapsing onto the couch with her head in her hands. “Good thing I offered myself up as a vampire bride with my two sisters being wolf mates.” She groaned and mumbled more stuff Val couldn’t quite hear.

“If you’re done throwing yourself a pity party,” Ceecee snapped, “we’ve got some stuff to discuss.”

“Like what?” Lil asked with her head still buried.

“Let’s start withLord. Who the fuck is that?” Val asked.

“Who do youthink?” Lil snapped. “Nikolas’s son. And he has been blowing up my phone, wondering why his dad isn’t responding to him. And I can’t exactly tell him that my sister killed his father.”

“In self-defense,” Reece, Celestine, and Nero said in unison, making Val feel a bit better. Lilliane might be furious with her, but at least the others seemed to understand.

“The vamps won’t see it that way,” Nero explained. “For obvious reasons. What we need is a plan because they’ll attack. Of course, they’ll attack. They might have letonemember of the council die because he was causing trouble for them, but this is different.”

“I definitely had the impression that Nikolas was something of a leader,” Reece agreed.

“That’s because he is,” Lil cut in. “The vamps don’t do anything without consulting him. He is the brain. He also happens to be super scared of fire.”

Nero grinned, and Val thought he might have lost his mind. “We can use that to our advantage.”

Right there, a few feet away from where Valentine had killed a vampire, they made a plan.

TWENTY-FIVE

NERO

They had a plan.

Nero couldn’t decide if it was a particularly bad one or a particularly good one. Time would tell.

Actually, Lilliane Longborn’s fickle nature would tell.

A lot of the plan hung on her shoulders, and he wasn’t sure that was wise. She’d proven more than once that she wasn’t exactly the most reliable of the Longborn sisters. This had the potential of turning to shit and fast, but both Valentine and Celestine insisted they could trust their little sister.

Reece seemed a bit more receptive. Probably because his mate hadn’t driven halfway across the country to save Lilliane from herself.

Then, there was Atlas to consider.

Nero had reservations about their plan. Atlas would be livid. Furious. He wouldn’t be pleased about this development, and Nero didn’t exactly look forward to telling the other wolf how sideways things had gone. Atlas was sure to roar a very loudtold you so.

Nero parked his truck in front of his friend’s house, and before he was even up the front steps, Atlas was slamming the door shut behind him.

“I’m guessing you found your errant vamp,” Atlas grumbled.
