“We did.”

“Then why does it look like someone pissed on your territory?”

Nero chuckled. They’d known each other for too long. “Because you’re about to hate me.”

Atlas’s gaze darkened. “What did you do?”

“Another vampire council member might have been killed in my mate’s cabin.”

“What thefuck, man? How could you let thathappen?”

“It’s not like it was done on purpose. It was actually a self-defense situation.”

“Sure it was. The vamps won’t give a shit, and now you’re two vampire mates have brought down a pile of shit on all our towns.”

“Yup.”

“How can you be so calm?” Atlas shouted. “This means our doom has come. In the form of three sisters.”

“They’ve been here their whole lives,” Nero pointed out. “We just didn’t interact with them. I personally didn’t even know young women lived in that house. They have just as much a right as our wolves to live here. And as residents of Blackwood …”

“They’re from Longville,” Atlas snapped. “That’syourland.”

Nero crossed his arms. “Oh? Is that how it’s gonna be now?”

Atlas narrowed his eyes to slit. “No. Obviously not. But a guy can be pissed about this kind of shit.”

“I know. It’s not like we planned it.”

Atlas snorted and rolled his eyes. “I told you before you left with your mate. I …”

“Yeah, yeah. And like I told you, one day, you will understand.”

Another snort and another eye roll. “Let’s just focus on getting your vamp girls safe. If I ever meet my mate, I’ll send her packing.” Atlas studied him carefully. “I’m actually kind of shocked you were so up on the mate thing. Especially after what happened.”

Nero’s throat closed a bit. “Don’t bring that up.”

“Why? It was a good thing to learn about mates and all that.”

His nostrils flared. “My parents weren’t a cautionary tale.”

Atlas blinked at him. “Yeah. They kinda were. As soon as Reece’s parents were killed, your mom was out of here. Gone. Left. She never came back.”

“I know this.”

“Right. So you know that if a mate doesn’t die, she’ll leave and never return, or she will bring a mess of trouble. None of those options are appealing to me. I thought you felt the same.”

Nero couldn’t understand the full extent of his friend’s anger. They’d be through a lot of loss together, but they hadn’t exactly made a pack to be lone wolves together.

The whole point of being a lone wolf was to be alone and not need anyone.

“Your mom stayed,” Nero pointed out.

Atlas shook his head. “Sure.” His lips were smashed down into an angry line. “If you want my help with this vamp problem, let’s just keep the mate talk to a minimum.”

“You got it,” Nero grumbled.

Once all of this mess was cleared up, Nero would sit with his old friend and hash this shit out. Whatever Atlas was hanging on to, it wasn’t good. The other wolf was getting bitter, and Nero didn’t know what to do about it. Instead, he filled in Atlas with the plan, and both wolves agreed that the perimeters of all four towns and their outskirts needed to be monitored at all times.
