Chapter One

Adam

Rolling over in bed, his entire body ached and even though it felt like he’d drunk his weight in alcohol, Adam never touched the stuff. He knew he wasn’t hungover but that didn’t explain why he felt like absolute dog shit.

Picking up his favorite blue blanket, he rubbed it against his face, inhaling deeply. His blanket had the most comforting scent in the entire world. Adam had no idea how to explain the scent other than saying it smelled like home. He wasn’t some crazy person that didn’t wash his blankie. Yes, he’s seen some of the littles from the club who did that, and Adam was in no position to judge—he just couldn’t imagine his blankie without the clean fresh scent. He washed his blankie every single week with the most expensive laundry detergent and fabric softener and used a handful of dryer sheets. Adam didn’t even wash his clothes with all those expensive items but his blankie was special.

The doorbell rang and remembering that his roommates were out of town for the week, Adam had a decision to make. He could either remain in bed wallowing in his misery or get up and see who was there. Maybe they had food? Not that random visitors usually brought him food but it was always a possibility. Luck might have finally turned in his direction if there was food. Adam was so hungry.

Pounding on the front door was followed by another chime of the doorbell.

“I’m coming. I’m coming.” Muttering and sulking toward the front door, Adam carried his blankie in one hand and just wanted to bury his head under the soft fabric. Instead, he yanked open the door to glare at whoever was out front.

The plastic bag in his face confused him but did it have food in it?

“I brought all the sugary goodness that I could find! This is going to be the most epic of epic of epic fun ever!”

“Nash?” Adam pushed the bag out of his face. “What are you doing?”

“I’m early.” Nash grinned and Adam would swear if he was a puppy, his ears would be perked up and his tail would be wagging. “I know I’m early and you sort of threatened me not to be early, but I have a good excuse.”

“Excuse?” Adam repeated. “What are you even doing here?”

Nash’s face fell as his excitement died right there in Adam’s presence. Even Nash’s shoulders slumped, and Adam felt like he’d just kicked a puppy.

“Sorry!” He couldn’t be mean to Nash. He’d tried. He’d tried hard for several months now, but Nash just wouldn’t go away. Maybe Adam didn’t want him to go anywhere anymore but he wasn’t ready to admit that either. “I’m sorry. I took a nap and woke up feeling bad. Did we have plans?”

“Epic bad Syfy movie marathon,” Nash replied but his excitement had definitely dimmed.

“Oh yeah.” They’d planned this night weeks ago. Later in the week, they’d all meet up at Carson and Sam’s lake house for a Thanksgiving celebration, but in the meantime Sam and Carson were in Vegas visiting Carson’s old detectives. Caden and Lincoln were spending a few days with them as Caden had never been and wanted to go along. Adam didn’t have classes that week, but he did have studying to do, so even though he’d been invited along, he’d passed. Plus, Adam did not have good memories associated with Las Vegas and never wanted to step foot there again.

Since Nash and Lucas were both staying in town, they’d come up with a plan for a movie marathon night. Adam adored old bad horror movies, the classics, but especially loved B-horror movies that were so stupid they were great.

“It’s okay. I’ll go.” Nash backed up.

“No!” Adam didn’t want to ruin their plans. He’d been looking forward to hanging out with Nash and Lucas again. The two men confused the hell out of Adam, but he liked being around them. “I still want to have movie night. I’m just tired or something. If you don’t mind—”

“You’re sick,” Nash blurted out. “That’s what you’re trying to tell me.”

Adam nodded. “I don’t know if I’m sick but…I don’t want to be alone.” Usually, he didn’t mind but when he didn’t feel well, Adam turned into a needy boy as Sam liked to call him. Sam and Caden weren’t there to take care of him though.

“I could take care of you,” Nash offered. “I mean, I could try. I’m not particularly good at being the responsible one though.”

Adam smiled at Nash’s admission.

“Hey! Lucas is coming! I bet he’ll know what to do for you.” Nash looked down at the bag in his hand. “That reminds me. I came early so I could hide all the candy. You know how Lucas is about junk food.”

“No. How is Lucas about junk food?”

Nash screeched as he spun around. The overflowing bag went behind his back like he was actually going to hide it.

Adam was pretty sure that a couple of candy bars fell to the ground in Nash’s haste. He chuckled as he leaned against the doorframe. “Very nice, Detective,” he teased Nash.

Nash ducked his head sheepishly.

Clucking his tongue, Lucas stomped up the stairs in his big biker boots. Everything about Lucas was big. Sam called him a giant and he wasn’t far off. However, in the few months that Adam had known Lucas, he also knew that Lucas was one of the kindest men he’d ever met. Lucas was a gentle giant as much as Nash was an eager pup.

Reaching the top of the stairs, Lucas stopped in front of Nash then snapped his fingers.
