“Nash!” Adam scolded.

“Just saying.” Nash slouched back. “He didn’t have to send everyone into a panic.”

“That’s true.” Maverick crossed the room to sit in the chair. “Except I didn’t want to give my brother a shock and not be here to comfort him. I didn’t know who he had here for support.”

“Well he has us,” Nash said. “He’ll always have us.”

“Two men,” Maverick said. “Can’t say that I expected that. Although I’m happy that everything that happened didn’t stop you from loving who you wanted.”

Adam flushed.

Lucas joined Nash and Adam on the couch. With Adam between them, Lucas’s protective instincts settled. He didn’t think Adam’s brother was there to hurt him, but Adam must not talk about his family for a reason.

“So how did this happen?” Maverick waved a hand indicating the three of them.

“One of my best friends Caden, you saw him in the shop earlier, started dating this guy’s partner.” Adam pointed at Nash. “Then Lucas opened his shop across the street.”

“Let me guess—it was love at first sight.” Maverick grinned and waggled his brow.

Nash snorted. “Not even close.”

“I might have…been confused,” Adam admitted.

“You were a tough nut to crack,” Nash said.

“I…” Adam shook his head. “We had a…problem come up at the shop.”

“Problem?” Maverick repeated.

“Drug cartel leader tried to kidnap Caden to teach us a lesson,” Nash said.

“What?” Maverick’s voice rose.

“He’s dead now,” Nash turned to look at Maverick. “We take care of our own. But your brother kept everything together and took care of the other boys.”

“I…” Maverick shook his head. “A drug cartel.”

“It’s a long story. Let’s not talk about it now.”

“Sure. Yeah. So these guys?” Maverick asked.

“Lucas busted through the door and took down the gunman as Caden threw hot coffee at the cartel guy,” Adam said. “I called Lincoln—he and Caden had already been dating—and Nash made sure I was okay. They both did. While everyone else was taking care of Sam and Caden, these two guys made certain I was okay. They took me home that night.”

“We bought you ice cream and took you home,” Nash corrected.

“Ice cream does take care of most of life’s bad moments,” Maverick agreed.

“After that they kept hanging around, making sure that I wasn’t alone when I went in to do the early morning baking, and we started weekly movie nights. Everything just grew from there.”

“That’s even better,” Maverick said. “Natural. Makes relationships last longer.”

“Do…do you have someone? Are you married? Children?” Adam asked nervously. “Sorry, I don’t know anything about you.”

“I know Adam. I’m sorry. I want to make it up to you. I want to get to know you again if you’ll let me.”

Nash grunted, which basically was the best that Maverick was going to get from him. Lucas needed to steer the conversation in a better direction.

“Problem, Detective?” Maverick questioned.
