“Yeah, we can do more there. Pack a bag tonight and we’ll meet here in the morning.”
Lincoln pressed his lips together.
“Have Caden stay with Sam. We’ll both feel better if they’re together,” the L.T. said.
“Good idea.” Lincoln had already started eating again. “They’ll like that.”
Nash pushed his food around his container. He’d make sure that by the time he was back, Adam would be able to forget all about the past. He wasn’t the type of partner who could cook for Adam, clean up after him, know what to do if Adam got sick. Nash wasn’t Lucas. But this he could do. He could ensure Adam’s safety going forward.
He eyed his partner and the L.T. as they ate. They might have to make a stop at whatever hole Adam’s mom could be found in.
Chapter Fifteen
Adam
“I’ll save you!” Adam lined his little green army men to form a protection barrier for the blue sparkly dragon. The good army would make sure that Mister Smokey was safe. Mister Smokey was a good dragon.
The blue army, made up of Smurfs and a few rogue army men, marched toward Mister Smokey.
“Not cool, Smurfs!” Adam told them. “You guys are bullies. Mister Smokey never hurt you.”
“Hey, baby.” Lucas crouched down beside him. “I brought you something to drink.”
“Thanks, Daddy!” Adam took the sippy cup from Lucas and drank deeply. Protecting good dragons sure was thirsty work.
“Um, baby?”
“Huh?”
“Are the Smurfs the bad guys?”
“Yes, Daddy.” Didn’t everyone know that?
“Can I ask why?”
“Creepy, Daddy, and they’re mean to cats.” It really was obvious.
“Oh, okay.”
“K, Daddy.” Adam sucked down more lemonade. Lucas made his lemonade himself and it was the best that Adam had ever tasted. Even Nash had taken a thermos to work with him. “Na-Na?”
“He’s still working, baby. I just heard from him though. He’ll be home soon.”
Working because of Adam’s stepfather and the bad people. “Bad guys.”
“Yes. Na-Na is going to catch the bad guys.”
“K.” It wasn’t something that little Adam needed to worry about. He had a dragon to protect after all. He set up more green army guys to make a second line then pulled out the wizard figure.
The wizard had the most awesome powers ever. And he liked Mister Smokey because Mister Smokey saved the village that the wizard was born in.
There was going to be an awesome battle.
Adam knew that the good guys would win though. The good guys always won. It didn’t matter what the bad guys tried to do because good always defeated evil. Before he could launch an attack, Adam drank the rest of his lemonade.
“Daddy!” He held his cup up in the air.
“I’ll get you more.” Lucas patted his back before he took the cup and headed toward the kitchen.
