“Caden’s my best friend too,” Adam pointed out.

“He doesn’t like candy! He says I can have it all!”

“He did not.” His friend was a nut.

“He might have. You don’t know.”

“I know that Caden still likes candy,” Adam said.

“Fine.” Sam groaned. “I’ll share the candy with him.”

“Maybe I’ll skip the store,” he teased.

“You had better bring me candy back, Adam Carter!” Sam demanded.

“I promise,” Adam assured his ridiculous friend. “I’m going to call my brother and let him know.”

“Good plan. Don’t forget to call us.”

“I’ll talk to you soon.”

They disconnected. Adam stared at the phone before he went through his contact list. He and Maverick had exchanged numerous text messages since they’d reconnected. This would be the first time that Adam had called him though.

He pressed his brother’s name.

“Adam, hey, bro.”

It was so nice to hear Maverick’s voice. It was something that he thought would never happen. Warmth settled in his belly to have the connection with his brother once again.

“Adam?”

“Mav,” Adam said.

“Are you okay.”

“Fine. I swear. I just wanted to let you know.” He had to swallow what felt like a boulder in his throat. “I’m going to Vegas.”

“Adam, why?” Maverick sounded panicked.

“I want to help bring him down,” Adam told him.

“You—”

“I’m doing it. I have to. I just wanted to let you know.”

“I’ll meet you there.”

“No!” Adam exclaimed. “You have work. The military isn’t going to let you just take a vacation.”

“I have a few days starting tomorrow. I was going to call and see if I could come back to Rocky Lake. I wanted to spend more time with you. I was hoping your man wouldn’t mind me staying in the guest room again.”

“You’re always welcome,” Adam said. “Lucas told you that.”

“I was hoping that would still be the case. Next time. Now, I’ll meet you in Vegas instead.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“We started this together and we’ll end it together. I want to be there when that asshole gets what he deserves.”
