“Makes sense,” Kristen said, yanking open the backdoor and getting in. While Robert walked around the truck to the driver’s door, she leaned forward and whispered. “If you miff off my friend, she won’t be the only one who zaps you – I’ll kick you in the balls so hard you’ll be wearing them as ear muffs.” Billy blinked twice. “Perfect for snowy weather.”

Just as Robert yanked open the door and climbed inside, he noted the way that Billy had half turned in his seat and was eyeing Kristen over his shoulder. “What happened?”

Billy turned back in his seat. “Not a damn thing,” he said.

Robert shoved the key into the ignition and looked back over his shoulder at his mate. She snapped on a bright grin and wiggled her eyebrows at him. But she didn’t say a damn word.

CHAPTER EIGHT

“Sorry!” Zoe said as her shoulder hit the large tree trunk, and she turned to realise that she was an idiot. She pressed her lips together and chuckled. “Not sorry,” she whispered, giggling some more.

Then she narrowed her eyes and tried to remember what she’d been doing. “That’s it,” she said to herself. “Following my tracks.”

The trouble was, her tracks had led her back to the same tree a few times, and she’d been walking for what felt like an eternity. When she checked her watch, she sighed. “Ten minutes!”

Then she huffed, put her back to the tree and slid down to her backside in the snow.

Zoe was drunk, tired, and her fingers were cold and tight. “If I just take a little nap,” she said and tipped her head back against the trunk.

“Hey, stupid!”

Zoe jolted and opened her eyes. “Oh, no,” she grumbled, eyeing Maria’s damn cat. “I know I’m drunk when the cat talks.”

Anya transformed into her fairy body and eyed the witch with a slow shake of her head. “You really going to sleep out here?”

“That’s the plan; close my eyes, get a few winks, and…” She waved an absent hand around.

“Never wake up,” Anya said. “When they handed out brains, you were in the back of the queue and got the sloppy leftovers.”

“Is that an insult?” Zoe asked, trying to force her eyes open, but sleep beckoned, and she was more than willing.

Anya groaned. She did owe the witches a favour, but Maria hadn’t called it in, and this one was in no fit state to do it herself. Anyone who thought sleeping in the snow was a good idea had to be a little crazy. “Okay, get up,” she said and reached down for Zoe.

“Too tired to walk; give me ten minutes, and I’ll be good to go,” Zoe muttered. Then without another word, she snorted in her sleep.

“What the…?” Anya poked the witch, but Zoe didn’t move. “Magic it is,” she said, calling on her powers and lifting the witch in the air like she was sitting on a magical floating carpet.

Zoe’s head lulled forward, and she snorted another snore but didn’t wake up.

Anya rolled her eyes. “This should be interesting,” she said and started to walk Zoe through the trees, floating all the way. “I’m walking my pet witch – nobody will believe this one when I tell them.”

“Should we go?” Maria asked, rushing alongside the two shifters as they moved towards the woods.

Kristen opened her mouth to speak, but Billy got there first. “Can you track?” he growled.

“No,” Maria said.

“Then no,” Billy growled.

Robert stopped in his tracks and got in front of Maria and Kristen. “Right now, there is one witch lost in the woods; we don’t need to be slowed down or looking for two more,” he said.

Kristen winced as she considered it. She wanted to go because it was Zoe, but she didn’t want to slow them down. “Fine, we’ll stay, but…”

“We’ll find her,” Robert said, turning and heading after his brother.
