“Waiting for someone to get rowdy so I can break a few heads,” Heather said. “I like to think of it as stress relief.”

Duncan’s smile started slow and captured her interest before it turned into a wicked evil grin. “If you give me the rest of that bottle on the shelf, I will personally start a bar fight that will leave you in awe of how many heads you need to break.”

Heather pursed her lips as she considered it. Then she took a step back, reached for the bottle, and Eileen’s hand came down on top of it. “I have great hearing, don’t even think about it,” she informed the vampire.

“Spoilsport,” Duncan said.

“Yeah, spoilsport,” Heather agreed.

Eileen yanked the bottle from beneath Heather’s hand and slid it down the bar to the vampire. “On the house, if you behave,” she said.

Heather looked at Duncan, and the vampire offered her an apologetic look. “Sorry, got a better offer,” he said.

Heather turned away with a sigh. “The kind of fights that man would start would leave my bar looking like world war three,” Eileen said. “Cool your heels; Jed and Larry will start punching each other in the face before the doors close.”

“Is that a promise?” Heather said, looking downcast.

“You betcha,” Eileen said. “You want to be on that side of the bar when it starts, so go clear some tables.”

Heather slowly cracked a smile. She was going to enjoy this.

Duncan lifted his hand and beckoned Eileen over. “You didn’t tell her that Jed and Larry were shifters?”

“I would hate to spoil the surprise,” Eileen said and eyed Heather as the witch cleared the tables. “Besides, how else do you see what a witch is made of if you give her a heads up?”

“And I thought I was the dastardly evil one,” Duncan said.

“How wrong you were,” Eileen replied.

CHAPTER NINE

~

Anya rolled her eyes again when Zoe rumbled a long snore. This was getting boring, and she was starting to have mischievous thoughts – like, how fun it would be to roll the witch all the way home. She’d look like a snowman when she got there, and she could knock on the door, hide, and see how long it took the other witches to figure out who the mysterious snowman was.

But humans were fragile, and the whole reason she was helping the woman was so she didn’t freeze to death.

Anya heard the muted crack of a twig from the right and stopped in her tracks. She listened hard, and there it was, the sound of heavy feet in the snow. “Whoops,” she said, turning to look at the witch floating in mid-air and knowing she couldn’t get caught by some human in the act of magic.

What was she supposed to do with the sound of feet coming up fast?

Anya yanked her magic and whipped away. She’d hide and wait for the danger to pass, and if someone took the sleeping woman off her hands, so much the better; she could go about her night.

Billy got there just in time to see Zoe hit the ground, face first, right into the snow. He was sure her legs had been folded beneath her, but what kind of magic was that?

“Mother of Goddess!” Zoe said, yanking her face back and spitting snow as she buried her hands in the icy white stuff and pushed her upper body up. “I didn’t order a crushed ice drink.”

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Billy growled.

“Slow down, brother,” Robert said, coming from behind to check out the witch. “No harm, no…”

“Thought for the people who have to spend their night looking for her,” Billy said.

“What the frap are you doing here?” Zoe said, narrowing her eyes at the beta and curling her lip in disgust. “I didn’t order a side of wolf.”

“That’s it,” Billy said, holding up his hands. “She’s found; take her home.”

“Whoa,” Robert said, chuckling. “She’s your mate.”
