“Yeah.” They walked together back to the restaurant where she got in her car, tapped a text to Penny, who was still at base, and asked about their drunk driver’s condition.

He’s still in surgery.

Wife and kids there?

No sign of them.

Okay, thanks.

She noted Vince waiting and flashed her lights to let him know she was ready, then pulled out of the parking lot, with him following right behind her. She was more touched than she wanted to be at the care he was taking of her. Watching over her. Helping her.

Oh please, God, don’t let anything happen to him. I understand what he’s saying about you beingin charge of what happens, but that doesn’t stop me from being anxious about it. Which I know issomething you and I probably need to address. She paused in the prayer.I want to trust you, God, I do. I’m sorry it’s so hard for me. I’m trying. So ... help me. Please.

Simon’s phone rang and he rose from the couch to take the call in the sunroom. “Well?”

“I got what you wanted.”

“And?”

“There are advantages of having access to a private plane.”

“Agreed.” He’d planned on selling the plane as soon as possible—even had an interested buyer—but he needed the plane and the pilot for the moment if he was going to have his man going back and forth across the country. Hopefully, everything would be wrapped up before the buyer wanted to do the test flight next week. “You flew there, then what?”

“I went to the kid’s home. They’re not there. Looks like they’re either just gone for the night or a few days. Everything looks normal, though. Neat, tidy, and waiting for them to come back.”

“You got in the house?”

“Yeah. Found some stray hairs in what looked like the kid’s bathroom, so I bagged them and sent them to be tested.”

“Excellent.”

“But get this. I talked to one of the neighbors. Told them I was a real estate agent and asked them some questions pertaining to real estate that got them comfortable.”

“Are you going somewhere with this?”

“Don’t be rude. I wouldn’t tell you if I didn’t have a point.”

Simon drew in a deep breath and pressed his fingers to his eyes. “Right. Sorry.”

“That’s better. Anyway, I asked them if they knew when their neighbor would be home and that I had an interested buyer for their home. Of course they had to point out that the house wasn’t for sale, but anyway, long story short, I found out thatthe little family of three took off like stealth ninjas and never said where they were going or when they’d be back.”

Simon raised a brow. “Okay.”

“Here’s what I think. I think the mother saw the same footage you saw and warned the family that Keith might come looking for their kid.”

A cold feeling settled in the pit of his stomach. “I see. And you think they ran because of that?”

“I don’t think it’s a stretch.”

No. No, it wasn’t. “Did you find out who the mother is?”

“Now, that’s another story. Went from Colorado to a lawyer’s office in Burbank. Old-fashioned kind of dude. Kept a lot of his files in a huge cabinet on the wall.”

“Do you think I really care?”

“Come on, Simon. We’ve already had the chat about being rude. If you want to hear this, let me tell it my way.”
