Drawing on every ounce of what little patience he had, Simon gritted his teeth. “Please, continue.”

“That’s better. Anyway, I found the name of the woman.”

“Is she anyone who might be a problem?”

“It doesn’t look like it. Her name’s—”

“I don’t want to know what her name is. I just want you to know.” He had no use for anyone his son may have dated in the past. Not even thepossiblebiological mother of hispossibleonly grandchild. “Assuming the child is Keith’s—and I won’t admit he is until the results come back—but, just assuming ... I wonder why she didn’t tell Keith about the baby. Surely, she had to know she could get a fortune out of him.”

“You’re sure she didn’t tell him?”

He flashed back to his son’s reaction at seeing the boy on the television. “Positive.”

“It could be she didn’t want him to know about the child because ... well, because.”

“Because Keith is Keith and she knew it? Yes. Possibly.Which would fit with her warning them that he might come after the boy.” And she wasn’t wrong. Keith wanted his son. He could see it all over his face. Simon hesitated once more, then pursed his lips and blew out a soft puff of air. “The fact remains, she could potentially cause a lot of problems for my family. In fact, while she might not know it just yet, she could devastate us in so many ways.” Mostly financial, but almost even worse, she could destroy his family name if she was able to finger Keith as someone who hurt her in the past. And Simon had no doubt Keith had done something to her. After all, she’d been pregnant and not told Keith about the baby. And she’d put the child up for adoption, then dropped off the radar of life. “I’m not sure I want that kind of threat hanging over my head.”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet. We’ve got the DNA. Let’s see what happens from here on out. If we need to do some cleanup, we will.”

“Right. Right.” He nodded. “Yes. I agree. Let’s hold off on any further action until the results come back.” He scrubbed a hand down the side of his face. “But keep an eye on her. Make sure you know what’s happening and what she’s doing. And like you said, if we need to do some cleanup, we can make that happen.”

“You’re sure you don’t want to know more about her?”

“I’m sure.” In this instance, the less he knew, the better. Depending on what had to be done. “As long as she doesn’t appear to be looking for trouble, leave her be.”

“Got it.”

Simon hung up, his mind spinning with everything. And he couldn’t help wondering if he was doing the right thing by doing nothing. He turned to head back into the den and found Leslie standing in the open door.

She met his gaze. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“Not at all. Something I can help you with?”

She held up a gold pen. “You left this on the end table. I didn’t want you to wonder where it was if you went looking for it.”

He took it from her with a smile. “Thanks.” He never went anywhere without the pen, given to him by his late wife on their last anniversary before her death. Tucking the pen into his shirt pocket, he followed her back into the den.

“Everything okay?” she asked him.

“Yes, hon. Everything is fine.”

“Good.” She kissed his cheek and walked out of the room.

He’d been blessed with an amazing daughter-in-law. Simon sighed and let the smile fall from his lips. Everything was definitelynotfine. But it would be. Soon. And if there was anything he had to say about it, he would be blessed with two amazing daughters-in-law. The newest one with enough money to bail him out of his current financial mess and keep his family’s name out of the gutter.

CHAPTER

EIGHT

Once Raina was parked in her spot in the garage, Vince pulled into her drive with every intention of following her inside to make sure her home was clear. If she’d let him. Thankfully, she didn’t lower the garage door before she climbed out of her vehicle and turned to face him. “I’m fine. I promise.”

“Can I clear your house?”

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.”

She studied him for a moment, seemed about to refuse the offer, then nodded. “Okay. Sure.” She walked back into the garage, and Vince followed her, relieved she hadn’t put up a fuss about him doing so.
