“We’ll go in through this door,” he said. “I’ll clear the house, and then go out the front door. At which point—”

“I’ll set the alarm.”

“Good.”

She pressed the button on the wall and waited until the door was down, then she walked inside while Vince shut the door behind him. He paused a moment, breathing in the scent oflavender and something else that was uniquely Raina. A cross between vanilla and—

“Essential oils?” he asked.

“Yep. Love them.”

He did too now. “You’ll have to give me the name of what you use so I can get some.”

She raised a brow. “Seriously?”

“Absolutely.”

Her lips curled in a small smile. “I’ll text the names to you.”

“Thanks. All right, closet to the left.” He gestured. “May I?”

“Of course.”

He opened it, then shut it. Raina let him pass her and the washer and dryer and step into the kitchen.

“Nice kitchen,” he said.

“Thanks. It’s one of the reasons I rented the place.” The kitchen led into the den she’d set up with two couches and a large-screen television mounted over the fireplace. The place was cozy and warm. He hadn’t expected that for some reason.

Vince held a hand out to her. “Stay here, okay?”

“Vince, no one is in here.”

“And I’ll feel better once I’ve proven that. I just need to do the two bedrooms and the bath and we’ll be good, all right?”

She planted both hands on her hips but nodded. “Okay.”

It didn’t take him long to make his rounds through the other rooms and come back into the den area. “All clear.”

“Thank you.”

“I wouldn’t have been able to sleep tonight if I’d not done that,” he said, “so thanks for letting me.”

She smiled. “Well, I appreciate it. Now, go home and get some rest.”

“I’m going. Set the alarm?”

She walked him to the front door. “Setting it.”

He slipped out onto the porch, turned, and looked into her green eyes. “Call me if you need me?”

“I ... will.”

“You’re making progress.”

She laughed. “I’m trying. Good night, Vince.”

“Night.”
