Raina fell silent. “Sorry. I’m babbling, aren’t I?”

“A bit. Take a breath and tell me what’s going on?”

She explained the situation. “And I need to get there because apparently, I’m the only person alive who can point the finger at Kevin Anderson—or whoever he is.” Raina pinched the bridge of her nose. “I’m willing to bet he’s going to be there.”

Penny frowned. “Raina, you can’t go with no plan. Or backup. Or whatever.”

“I know. Vince is working on that.”

“You said you’re willing to bet Kevin’s going to be there. What about Michael? Do you even know for sure that he’s going to be there? His parents may decide his safety is more important.”

The air left Raina’s lungs. It was possible Michael might not be going and she was off on a fool’s errand anyway. Could she trust her memories of Kevin from over a decade ago were still accurate? Kevin could have changed during the past fourteen years. She sure had.

But men like him didn’t change, did they?

Not without divine intervention and a serious “come to Jesus” moment. It was possible, of course, but she wasn’t going to take that chance.

The same man Grace had profiled for her, describing him as a narcissist and probable sociopath.

A man who wouldn’t care one bit about the harm he would cause a boy and his family if he decided Michael belonged to him. “I know it seems crazy. But on the off chance that Michael and his family decide the risk is worth him performing at the event, I have to go.”

Penny glanced at the clock on the wall. “Okay, first, we can’t take my chopper. Denver is just too far without fuel stops.” She wrinkled her nose and squinted at the ceiling. “Like four stops if I did the math right. And it would take us about nine hours to get there.”

“Oh.” Raina’s shoulders slumped. “Of course it would. We’ll just have to fly commercial, but that will take so long too.” She pulled her phone from her pocket and started searching for flights. “Well, it is what it is.”

Penny sighed. “Maybe not.”

“What do you mean?”

“I have a friend who has a jet at the same hangar.”

“The hangar on top of the mountain?”

“A flat top of the mountain with a runway, yes.” She shook her phone at Raina. “Let me see if I can get in touch with Bob and ask him if I can use the jet.”

Raina blinked. “Are you rated to fly that?”

A slow grin curved her friend’s lips. “I am.”

“When did that happen?”

“It’s a surprise. Or it was. I was going to fly Holt and me to the Dominican Republic for a special weekend.”

“So, those are the errands you’ve been running.”

“Yes. Flying lessons and then the test. I passed a while ago, but have been flying every chance I got to get hours in.” Her fingers flew across the screen of her phone.

“And you can fly solo?”

“Well, of course.” Her phone buzzed and she glanced at it. “That’s Bob. He says it’s fine.”

“Fuel’s expensive, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, but we’ll worry about that. Bob gives me a special rate on it because I’m letting him use my chopper for his lessons.”

“Awesome. Penny, that’s amazing.”

Her friend scowled. “But not a word to Holt.”
