She slowly nodded her head and leaned back into the couch. All she wanted to do was sleep. It was getting harder and harder for her to keep her eyes open, no matter how cold she was.

“Alright, I found two on your bed,” he said as he draped them over her. “I’m going to have a look at your thermostat and see what I can do.”

She didn’t know how to respond to that. There were too many things going on at once and she couldn’t wrap her brain around everything.

“You just relax and don’t think about it too much. I’m here now to take care of you,” he said as he leaned down, placing a kiss on her forehead.

She melted into the couch and watched as he walked away.

CHAPTER SIX

MILES

Miles took everything in as Storm sat on the couch. What was she doing living in an apartment like this? Did she not get paid enough to acquire something better?

He knew the bookstore she worked at paid their employees well. He had looked into it when Hedda wanted to go there. It was easy to find all their information on the dark web. He needed to make sure it was safe for Hedda. If anything happened to her, her brother would have a fit. She was precious to him, and Miles couldn't blame him.

His sister, Monroe, was kind of in the same situation. Something bad had happened to her and when Miles had found out, he’d taken matters into his own hands to make sure the man had gotten what he’d deserved. Part of him thought that was why Rogan had allowed him to go to Missouri and see his sister. That and Jared had been on the list of people Rogan needed to have taken care of.

It was a two for one. He’d taken out the person and gotten to meet his sister. He wished he could go there more often, but knew he needed to be here. There was so much that needed to happen, and him being in a different state where nothing was happening wasn't going to help the family.

Miles was shocked with how little Storm had of everything. There was very little food in her fridge or pantry, and it looked like she was living with just the bare minimum in the rest of the apartment.

He picked up his phone and started to text Hedda.

Did you know about her living situation? - Miles

Her text came in quick, almost like she was waiting for him to text her.

No. How bad is it? - Hedda

Bad. Bare minimum and no food or medicine. - Miles

The bookstore makes a ton of money and I know you looked into it. What do you think could be the problem? - Hedda

I don't know but I'm going to find out. - Miles

He walked through her kitchen, looking at everything and typing down what he needed. He wanted to get her fridge fully stocked while he was here, but also make sure she had several things when he left. Non-perishable foods made it on the list.

Had she been struggling like this since she’d arrived? Why hadn't she said anything to Hedda?

Miles understood why she wouldn't say anything to him because she’d just met him. He couldn’t expect her to spill her every secret to him.

Making his way to the bathroom, he made sure to be quiet as he walked past Storm. She looked like she was asleep, but he didn't know for sure and didn't want to wake her up if she was. He looked through the storage in the bathroom to see what all she had.

Absolutely nothing.

A little bit of shampoo and other types of soap were scattered around, but in terms of medicine, she didn't have anything.

Had she run out? Was that why she didn't have anything?

Miles looked in the trash can and found nothing. She could have thrown out bottles in a different trash can, but he had a feeling that what he was seeing would be everywhere.

Storm needed a keeper. A Daddy.

Had Hedda seen something he didn't from the very beginning? She had mentioned him being her Daddy. Could she have seen that Storm wasn't taking care of herself? He would need to talk to her later about that.

He sent off a text to one of the people below him, telling him to get everything and deliver it here. He didn't care if Rogan was going to ask questions because he needed to have this done, and now. Miles felt responsible for getting her sick because it was his birthday party. He wasn't the one that invited her, but it was his nonetheless.
