“Surprisingly, yes.”

“It can’t just be a good deed because I fucking care about your safety.”

“Nope. That’s not how they work.”

“Says who?!” He barked, clearly equal parts entertained and frustrated. But when I went to open my mouth, he grumbled, “Your stupid writers with their stupid stories, yeah, yeah.Jesus.” When Jameson’s steely eyes found mine again, they slowly narrowed.

“There it is. What are you thinking?” When he said nothing, I pushed, “Come on, I can see those wheels turning. What can I give back to you?”

“Shut up for two seconds, woman, and let me think.”

I laughed, but his glare halted the air in my throat. Zipping my lips and twisting an imaginary lock, I tossed him the invisible key.

“You’re not going to let this go?” He glowered when I shook my head. “This is fucking ridiculous.” My wide, expectantly blinking eyes made him groan, hands catching his forehead as it fell. “Fucking women, I swear to god, one of you will be the death of me.” I stifled my laugh. Finally, he lifted his eyes to mine, some dawn of realization on his face. “Practice.”

“What?” I balked, before remembering I was supposed to be quiet and clamping my hands over my mouth. Messing with Jameson was rapidly becoming one of my favorite pastimes.

“Look. I’m thirty-three-years-old, and Mom and Elora are frequently pointing out I haven’t had a relationship since Stephanie. And honestly past breakfast, I don’t have a clue what doing the boyfriend thing even looks like, so what if you’re…a guinea pig?”

I deadpanned. “Very flattering.”

“Well, I was trying to just do the right thing, and you forced me to pick a bargain.”

“I didn’t expect to be compared to a rodent.”

“Come on, help me out.”

“Practice? Like, teach you how to be a boyfriend.” I pressed, curiosity winning out over the fleeting ding to my ego.

“Don’t mock,” he said, scowling as he shifted his weight.

I laughed, shaking my head. “I’m not. I just…didn’t expect that.”

“What did you expect?”

“Baked goods and folded socks?”

He laughed, grumbling, “Dammit, I should have thought of that.”

“No, no, this is better. This way I get to take Eric down a notch—”

“I’m more excited about the ‘making sure you’re safe’part,” Jameson interjected.

“And you learn how to court a proper lady, which means I can be bossy.”

His smirk betrayed his attempt to look annoyed as he squeezed his temples, and I found myself grinning as he grumbled, “Deeply regretting my life choices.”

“We’ll start with your general grouchy fuckery.”

“Fuckery?” He asked, brows skyrocketing as a smirk pulled on his lips.

“You swear a lot. Women don’t like that.”

“Tough shi—” All it took was a raised brow for him to stop and furrow his face. “Damn. I do swear a lot. Look, I grew up at sea. Fight me.”

I laughed. “Oooh, yes, I like this. Okay, Rhodes, you have a deal.”

“Thank fu—” he cleared his throat, his general look of confusion bringing me way more pleasure than it should. “God. Thank God.”
