Nathaniel presented the promises he made Amelia, all of which I had previously approved. We reviewed the contract’s requirements, and I ended the meeting fifteen minutes late.

Chapter Eleven

Monday afternoon.

Arrival day.

Eighty-two days left.

Nathaniel and I sat across from each other while I hid in my office. He had ordered food from Gabby’s, which Jeremy had delivered, much to his disappointment. I picked at the gumbo I packed.

“Is that Parker’s gumbo?” he asked.

“Yes…”

“You like him,” he said in a singsong and mocking tone.

“Will you keep your voice down? The door is wide open.”

“Why? Afraid Richie might hear?” he exaggeratedly whispered.

Nathaniel and Richard also didn’t get along. I had asked all three of them, at separate times, why they disliked each other, but no one ever gave me a reason.

“No, I don’t. I barely know the guy. It’s just for…fun. Just to try and enjoy my weekends a bit more, like your future wife told me to.”

“Oh, I’d say you enjoyed your weekend,” he smirked. “Making out in the kitchen, Blake? How cliché of you.”

I gasped. “How did you know?!”

“My future wife doesn’t keep secrets from me.”

I rolled my eyes and finished my food.

Panic started to set in when I noticed it was almost time for Amelia’s team to arrive. Eating lunch seemed like a terrible idea now as I had to try to keep it in my stomach. Nathaniel scrolled on his phone, tapping his fingers on his knees, while I paced around the office.

A ding from the elevator prompted me to walk out and see if they had arrived. The doors opened, and it was just Gordon and Barry coming back from lunch.

“Are they here?” Nathaniel asked, stopping to fix the name tag on my door since it was slipping out of the plastic holder again. I needed to tape it shut.

Lainee wasn’t at her desk, so I felt confident that the next people to come out of that elevator would be the team from Truly You. I forced a smile through the fear and waited for the elevator doors to open.

Seconds later, the door squeaked, and the bell dinged. A woman, not much older than me, stepped off. I recognized her as Amelia from all the social media pictures. She was talking to Lainee and was followed by a woman and two men.

“This cannot be happening,” I groaned through my smile, barely loud enough for Nathaniel to hear. Heart rate increased. “It’s like I’m stuck in a bad sitcom.”

“Oh, crap,” Nathaniel muttered when he saw the same thing I did. He was also careful to keep a confident smile on his face. His hand landed on my shoulder, and I could tell what he was thinking. My hands went clammy. “Shake it off, Blake. You look like you saw a ghost.”

“A ghost would be better than this.”

I struggled to breathe normally.

“Nathaniel!” Amelia exclaimed, enthusiastically shaking Nathaniel’s hand.

She was taller than I expected. Her perfectly styled hair was long and wavy, almost reaching her butt. A black jumpsuit hugged her figure, adorned with a metallic belt that reflected the light.

“Wonderful to see you again, Amelia. Welcome to Capital Media, and welcome to New Windsor!”

“Happy to be here!” her voice had a slight twang.
