“Let me introduce you to the promised superstar, Blake Johnson,” he continued. “Our best and brightest. She will be your main point of contact while you’re here and the one overseeing your campaign.”

“Lovely to meet you, Blake!”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Amelia,” I shook her warm hand, praying she couldn’t feel how mine shook. “I’ve been following your rise; you are truly an inspiration. Thank you for trusting us for this. You will not be disappointed.”

“I’m confident y’all will do a great job. Let me introduce you to my team.”

The two men and the woman stood behind her. All of them wore a bright smile, except one was forced.

“This is Amanda Wood, our national sales manager.”

Amanda was barely taller than me, with a pixie cut that perfectly matched her angular face. She wore a white pencil dress and flats. She stood tall and proud to be at Amelia’s side.

“Next to her is Nick Wolf, our product development manager.”

The first man was Amelia’s height, with a shaved head and a long beard. He looked like he could be the lead singer of a rock band or the leader of a biker group. Not what I had expected.

The last man and I locked eyes. He wore a perfectly tailored pair of black slacks, freshly shined shoes, and a tucked-in button-down that concealed his tattoos. He fiddled with the rubber band around his wrist, his gaze revealing an equal amount of shock.

“And last, but certainly not least, this is Parker Robinson. Our chief counsel and my right-hand man.”

I shook Parker’s hand hesitantly. The hand that fits perfectly on the small of my back. An involuntary smile spread across his lips. The lips that had sent feelings through me in my kitchen.

“It’s a pleasure to meet all of you,” I smiled, or at least did my best to.

“It’s a pleasure to meet y’all as well,” Parker shook Nathaniel’s hand, pretending to be total strangers.

Lainee stepped in and led them away from us to get them set up in the conference room before our meeting. Before walking into the room, Parker turned toward Nathaniel and me as if he was ensuring this wasn’t his imagination. I shoved Nathaniel into my office and shut the door.

“How did you not know?” I whisper-yelled. “He’s chief counsel. You do contracts. How did you not know?!”

“I never met him! I didn’t even know they had a chief counsel. I dealt mostly with Amelia and occasionally with Amanda!”

“Were there no pictures or anything? No pictures of their team when you visited their office?”

“I was preoccupied while I was there. You’re the one that did all the research on them. How did you not know?”

“There were only pictures of Amelia!” I groaned, pacing around my office.

“Well…you know how I told you today would be fine? I think I lied…”

“You think?!” I panicked.

“Okay. Breathe, kid. In and out. You only have to get through the next few hours pretending you weren’t making out with him twenty-four hours ago.”

Nathaniel’s face went from panicked to entertained when the absurdity of the situation dawned on him.

“This isn’t funny!” I smacked his chest.

“Honesty moment? I have no earthly idea of what to do or tell you now, but it is kind of funny.”

“This is literally the worst day ever.”

“Let’s not be dramatic. Just try and get through the next few hours and then hash it out with him over that drink.”

“I can’t do that! He works for Amelia.”

“Be an adult, Blake. You at least have to talk to him about it.”
