"I did use you to gain information and insight into the area," he admits without a tinge of remorse.

Glaring at him, I say, "I know."

"Stop frowning at me. I don't like it."

"Should have thought of that before you made me your dupe."

"You aren't my dupe or a fool," he says with all the exasperation I felt moments ago. "You are intelligent and knowledgeable enough to be a resource and an asset."

"Maybe you should be a spin doctor instead of a facilitator." He sure makes my gullibility sound like something better. "But believe it, or not, no woman aspires to be an information asset to the man she has allowed into her body."

"I didn't have sex with you for information."

"Yeah, right," I sneer.

"We made love because neither of us can keep our hands off the other. Your pussy is made for my cock. Your womb meant to carry my babies. My strength exists to protect and cherish you."

These damn maybe-pregnancy hormones. I swipe at my cheeks, but fresh tears wet them again. His use of the termmade loverobs me of my ability to think, much less retort coherently.

And the rest? The rest shatters something inside me, something I refuse to examine.

Chapter 39

ATLAS

"This is the wrong exit." They are Lucia's first words in ten minutes.

"No, it isn't."

She sighs. "It is unless you want to add twenty minutes of slow traffic on surface streets before we get to my club."

"Our club now," I remind her, pushing for a reaction.

I don't get one. "Whatever, you know what I mean. There's a pharmacy right off the exit nearest the club if you're wanting to stop and get a pregnancy test."

"Do you want to keep Nuovi Inizi?"

"That's no longer an option, and don't change the subject. Why did you take this exit?"

I am not trying to change the subject, but I want to know how she feels about selling her nightclub to us. "What if it was an option?"

"To keep the club?" she asks derisively. "We've been over this. I'm not laundering money for your mafia. I'm not running sex workers out of my club, even if it's their job of choice. I am not, under any circumstances, setting myself up to take the legal fall for you and your brothers."

"I will never let that happen."

"Two days ago, I might have believed you. Now, where are we going?"

Willing to leave the discussion for now, but not forever, I say, "I had Zeus call and make an appointment with an OB at the clinic we had our tests done."

"You told your brother you think I’m pregnant?" she practically shrieks.

"Fuck, Lucia. I could have lost control of the car with you shouting like that."

She snorts. "Not likely. I can't believe you told Zeus I might be pregnant."

"If you are, it won't stay a secret for long." Eventually, she'll start showing.

I wonder when. I didn't look that up. I have more research to do on pregnancy. A lot more if I want to keep her safe like I promised. That includes keeping her and our baby healthy.
