"You're so astute."

"You cannot threaten to shoot me." Zeus sounds ticked.

"I just did, so it looks like I can."

"Lucia," he barks.

Ooh, theanaxis angry. Atlas doesn't look worried, but Theo is gripping the steering wheel tighter than he was when trying to avoid the Russians chasing us.

I sigh. "Fine. I won't threaten to shoot you anymore."

"Thank you."

Theo jerks and gives me a wide-eyed look in the rearview mirror.

"You're welcome. Don't call me a rat and we're good."

Zeus sighs. "You should not threaten youranaxregardless."

I shrug. The obedient mafia princess has been squeezed right out of my DNA.

"Lucky for you all, this happened on this street." Portland is a population dense metropolitan and not many areas are like this one with no foot or car traffic.

Even luckier, Portland decided against using the gunshot recognition system that was hotly debated for several months. Unless a security guard for one of the warehouses calls in suspicious sounds, the cops won't be the wiser.

No doubt by the time another car drives down the deserted street, Atlas's people will have removed all evidence of the gun battle and car accident.

"Not luck. Planning," Zeus says. "We located our compound where we did for a reason."

"Because it is surrounded by mostly industrial buildings, or no buildings at all." East of the city, it is closer to the seedy bar we first saw the bratva soldiers in than to my club.

"You have a very mafia centric mindset." Atlas puts one hand on my thigh, but the other holds his gun ready and his eyes are fixed on the world outside the SUV.

"I guess. It was fun living like a normal person for a few years though." When I wasn't stressing over making a success of the club and keeping Lenny where he's happy.

Or worrying about if someone from my past would walk into the club once it became so popular with out-of-towners.

Okay, normal might be overstating the case.

Chapter 46

LUCIA

We reach the mansion without further incident. Rolling right through the gates open to let us in, Theo brings the SUV to a lurching halt in front of the house.

Neither he, nor Atlas, open their doors though.

Theo is watching something behind us. Atlas is casing the area with laser focus. I wait in silence.

"It's shut." Theo must mean the gate.

Atlas nods. Takes another look around the house and then opens his door. "Let's go."

He steps out and then puts his hand out to me.

I slide across the seat to take it. By the time I get out of the SUV, Theo and the rest of the crew are there, creating a protective barrier around me.

"I thought Zeus said there are no sniper vantage points," I say as I'm ushered inside.
