"I'm working on it."

"What's to work on?"

"I'll explain tonight."

He's going to propose tonight? And he's telling me about it? But then I did ask. Sort of.

"Yes, I would be interested in taking over the accounts for you and your brothers. I know a lot about laundering money."

"I thought you didn't want to work for criminals."

"Not as your patsy, but as a part of the family? That's different. I am not morally opposed to cooking the books, but I am categorically opposed to taking the fall for the organization."

"I will never let that happen." He looks dangerously angry at the idea.

"I believe you." Which is why I'm so intrigued by the idea of becoming their bookkeeper. "Talk to your brothers about me taking over the books."

"Don't you want to wait until after the baby is born?"

"No. I'd rather get stuck in now and get things running smoothly so that after the baby comes, I can cut my hours if I need to."

"You've thought about this."

"I have."

"And you want to be part of both sides of our business?"

"I do." I have no intention of existing on the periphery of Atlas's life. "You promised me I would always have a voice in your world. I'll hold you to that."

"There is no voice I would rather listen to."

"Not even your Godfather of the Night?" I tease.

"Not even my brothers."

And he puts his brothers over the head of the Hades Brotherhood. Atlas's priority is family over organization. That settles into my heart and fortifies my foundation for trust in this man.

Easier to believe I come first when he's already shown that, but also because his brothers come before the Hades Brotherhood.

I could argue they are one and the same, but Atlas and I both know that isn't exactly true.

Chapter 49

LUCIA

Atlas hands me my coat. "Put this on."

"Where are we going?" I'm used to his abrupt ways.

Sometimes I push back to prove I can. Right now, I'm curious. Is this when he takes me somewhere romantic to propose?

"To the compound." He never calls it home anymore. He's even referred to the mansion as his brothers' house.

So, not someplace romantic, or I guess it could be. It depends on what is waiting for me in his suite. Crimson handcuffs? "Okay. I wouldn't mind eating Gina's food again for dinner. She's a great cook."

"Not as good as you," Atlas replies loyally.

Only, I'm pretty sure he means it, even though Gina prepares his favorite Greek dishes. She's offered to teach me and I'm looking forward to taking her up on it.
