“I don’t think so.” I respond with confusion.

“Don’t act stupid, girl. I saw the way you and Noah looked at each other, and then you disappeared for hours?” she whisper yells at me.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, mom!” I fight back. I am lying through my teeth, but, oh well…

“Don’t you dare ruin this for me, little girl,” she bites. “You came in dressed like a second grade whore. What did you think? Do you want another man to leave me because of you!? I am embarrassed and disappointed. How could I ever birth someone like you?”

“Dad didn’t leave because of me, mom.” My eyes burn, my throat is lodged. The dress I wore to Marko’s house was not the most modest one in the world, but I didn’t look provocative.

“I want you nowhere near Noah. Do you hear me? I saw what happened.”

“Nothing happened, mom.”

“Do you think I’m stupid?” she asks angrily as I look away from her, “I saiddo you think I’m stupid, Ronan? You’re just waiting for some sad bastard to look your way, so you can spread your sorry legs!”

The sound of someone clearing their throat snaps me out of my misery for a moment. I lift my head, thinking it’s a server with our food, but it’s Noah. Noah looking really, really pissed. His nostrils flared, his eyes hooded.

“I’m quite sure you would gladly open yours for Jensen, isn’t that right Christine?” he says so calmly, it’s almost scary, and my eyes bulge out of my head. “Should I alert my father about that?”

“Uhm… Hello, Noah. I am not sure what you’re talking about.” she stutters, and in that moment I realize somethingdidhappen.

“I don’t like the way you are talking to mystepsister,Christine.” he says to her, the word burning on his tongue, as his eyes fall to mine.

“Noah…” she interrupts him.

“Iam the one talking now. I was just across the street, I saw you and wanted to say hi,” he says almost cheerfully, “But instead, I got an earful of your foul words. If I was you, I would reconsider my behavior about right the fuck now. I might be a softie, but don’t take me for a fool. I always put my family and their needs first, and she,” he says, pointing a finger at me. “She is my family now.”

My mother gets up from her chair, whipping her blonde hair back and grabbing her stuff off the table. She steps away, then turns around abruptly.

“I will let your father know about this,” she threatens.

“Sure, but tell him about Jensen first, so he knows what you are talking about when you tell him how I called you out.” Noah laughs out loud, waving his hand away.

She huffs, says something under her breath and leaves. The waiter approaches us at that moment, leaving the food and drinks on our table.

“What is this?” Noah scrunches his nose with disgust at the sight of two forkfuls of pasta on one plate and literally four cherry tomatoes and half of an iceberg lettuce on the other.

“That’s my mom’s idea of a meal for a fat cow like me.” I say, pointing to a sad looking salad, “And that’s her plate of pasta.”

“Don’t use that language when you are describing the woman of my dreams.” he says, as I almost choke on my sparkling water. “I’m sorry, I won’t do that again. Your mother is…a lot.” he says, rounding his eyes as he waves the server over. “Let’s do this properly. What would you like to eat, Ljubavi?”

“I would love some lasagna and a Coke, please!” I say happily.

“And I will have the same. Thank you! And leave this all here, I will eat it as an entree.” Noah nods to the waiter as he leaves.

“I am sorry for asking like this, but, what happened with Jensen?” Uneasiness rolls through my tummy.

“Not sure I should be the one to tell you that.”

“He asked me a bunch of questions last week, when I was at your dad’s.” I say, pleadingly. I can’t put Jensen through all that again.

“Oh, okay, well… Last New Year's eve she got a little bit drunk, or she might have been pretending, I am not sure. She came onto Jensen, sneaked into his room at our dad’s and got into his bed. She touched him all over, and that woke him up. He screamed bloody murder. He kept repeating ‘you sick bitch, I’m seventeen’,his whole body was literally shaking.”

“Oh my God.” I cover my mouth with my hand, hiding my shame and disgust.

“Our dad was out, looking at the fireworks. Once we got into Jensen’s room, he was sitting on the bed, asking her to get out, whilst she pleaded for him not to tell our dad. She said she was drunk and had mistakenly gone into his room, instead of their bedroom which was across the hall. I am just wondering how does one mistake a small beer belly for a twelve-pack? And Jensen decided to keep the secret because he didn’t want to ruin anything for dad. He already feels guilty enough.”

“I am so sorry to hear that, Noah. I will apologize to Jensen. Poor guy… He must be traumatized.” I am so ashamed of my mother’s actions, my face is completely red.
