Ronan gets up harshly, wiping her eyes, smudging her eyeliner a little. I smile at her. Rushing through the room, she finds a pair of slippers and switches her Doc’s with them, wiggling her feet.

“Okayyyyy! Enough of the sappy shit. It’s time for the party!”

She yanks the door open, changing her mood completely, and pulls me through it, loud music welcomes us.

God, I love this woman.

We sing and dance, and even though Ronan said after the mishap at the concert, that she won’t take a sip of alcohol ever again, she spent a good amount of time doing exactly that. Sipping the alcohol. She is happy and carefree, I love seeing her like that.

I on the other hand am completely sober. Corey did offer for us to stay at his house, but I don’t feel good intruding. Especially after he told me Jensen isn’t here because of me. Maybe I should text him, let him know I support him. Grabbing my phone out of my pocket, I slide the back door and step out onto the deck, while Ronan is still dancing with some of her old friends. Thankfully, Corey was right. Nobody hangs out here.

Did dad skip telling u that missing ur boyfriend’s birthday party is such an asshole move?

I sip on my drink and lean on the fence. Chilly wind is playing with my hair, goosebumps erupt all over my body.

I have no idea what u r talking about. U drunk?

This fucking kid. Liar.

Jensen, I know. No need for u to try and hide it. I am at Corey’s party, he told me. Are u at school? Can u come?

Oh. Sorry. I didn’t tell u because of our 15-year age difference.

I am at school, but I can come. I’ll be there in like 30 minutes.

Be good. I like him.

I’m always good. I don’t care about the age.

U are a grown man now. I’ll be here. C ya!

“Hey, man. What are you doing all alone out here?” A deep, raspy voice startles me, and I turn to find Corey walking over to me, “Want another drink?”

“I was actually texting your man, he’ll be here in half an hour. I have a drink already, thanks though!”

“Do you want to sit with me?” He motions to the small table and a few chairs scattered around it. “I can’t go back inside any time soon, I will lose my mind.”

“Too many people?”

“Too much everything. I am used to my peace.” He shrugs, sitting on a chair.

I follow behind him and set my drink on the glass top of the table. How could I refuse? Not every day do you meet the man who took care of the woman you love.

“I really care about your brother,” he says, rubbing his hand down his buzzed blond hair.

“I love Ronan.”

“I know. I see the way you look at her. Like she is everything.”

“That’s because she is,” I say in a matter-of-factly way. “She is everything. You know the woman, how could she not be.”

I stare at the rings on his fingers, wondering if Ronan will like the one I had ordered for her. He clears his throat, which makes me turn my attention back to him. His eyes look like they hold many secrets, many pains. They are blue, but it seems like there is a deep sadness set inside them, making them even more prominent. He has the eyes of an artist.

“I asked him to move in with me after he’s done with his school.”

“Here?” I lift my eyebrow at him.
