“Yeah. I bought the place. Hadn’t told Ronan yet.”

“Oh! That’s…wow! Congrats! Did he agree?”

“Yes. He wants to open up one of your stores here too, but like, with a twist. He said he told you about it.”

“He did, he wants it to be a music store with a coffee shop corner. I like that idea.” My heart beats a bit faster as I talk about my younger brother’s future. “If Jensen is happy, I am happy. Just take care of him, the way I am taking care of Ronan.”

“She seems a lot happier now. She was in a really bad place for a long time.” He switches the subject to Ronan, and I don’t object. I would love to know more about her.

“She does? I am a lot happier now too. When I met her, I literally felt this pull to her. Like a magnet.”

“I know, she told me all about it. She felt the same,” he says, sipping on his drink. “I mean, fate has fucked with her pretty hard.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, you know, the way y’all got back together. It’s really fucked up finding out you just fucked your stepbrother,” he chuckles.

“I mean, two years without her felt like hell, and then she walked in like ‘hi, stepbro’which made all of my dreams seem so unachievable for a moment.” I lift my face to the sky, thanking my lucky stars for helping us a little.

“That’s what she felt two years ago,” he continues, “I mean, it was funny for a moment, before I saw what it did to her.”

“What was funny?”

“That whole situation. She felt so devastated and broken when she saw your ID card and who your dad was, and she panicked. It took her one second to connect the dots.”

My heart just sank to the bottom of my feet.

What is this man talking about?

“I mean what are the chances of your mother getting married that morning, and you fucking your literal stepbrother that evening? Crazy, right? She was spying on you for two years, growing the balls to meet you again, but you already know that.” He laughs as a glass crashes against the wooden deck behind us.

My head spins with anger and pain as I turn around, seeing Ronan with her mouth hanging open and tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Corey… What have you done?” she sobs, bringing her shaky hand to cover her mouth. “What have you done?”

Noah (Marko) Lukovich

Serbian

And he is twenty three years old…

Oh God. Oh God oh God oh God. What have I done? My whole body shakes uncontrollably as I slide down the door. Noah’s ID is seared into my brain. My chest hurts, my head is overwhelmed with a thunder inside of it. Another day, another disappointment on my checklist. Why did it have to be him?

I lay curled up in a ball on a scratchy doormat, rubbing my eyes vigorously. I don’t know how many minutes or hours had passed, but I am not feeling any less empty or numb. I went out to celebrate Corey’s independence and getting a place of his own, but also to try and be happy about my mother’s latest attempt at family. I just wanted to have a fun night. I just wanted to feel young. And there he was… All tall and gorgeous. I noticed him the moment he walked in with that petite girl. Long lean limbs, hair as dark as night, eyes only for me. For fuck’s sake, could universe let me have something for myself, just this once? No. Of course not. Girls like me don’t get their happy endings. We get used when there is nobody better to fuck, and if there is someone who might actually like us, the stars make sure that combo is not on the menu.

My new tattoo burns through my bloodstream. A reminder. It will be a reminder. A reminder that I know how to choose them.

Hahaha.

Fuck.
